More than a decade ago, Ray Nagin was elected mayor of New Orleans on a vow to root out corruption in a city plagued by decades of it. On Friday, the former mayor was indicted on charges he lined his pockets with bribe money, payoffs and gratuities while the chronically poor city struggled to recover from Hurricane Katrina’s punishing blow.

The federal indictment alleges that city contractors paid Nagin more than $200,000 in bribes and subsidized his trips to Hawaii, Jamaica and other places in exchange for his help securing millions of dollars in work for the city.

The charges against Nagin are the product of a City Hall corruption investigation that already has resulted in guilty pleas by two former city officials and two businessmen and a prison sentence for a former city vendor.

The case also punctuates the reversal of political and personal fortune for Nagin, who had what New Orleans Magazine editor Errol Laborde called “rock star status” soon after his election in 2002.

Nagin, a former cable television executive, took office with an image as a largely apolitical businessman ready to root out corruption. “The media bought into that 100 percent. They used the term ‘crackdown on corruption,'” Laborde said Friday.

But Nagin’s popularity and support waned in the years after Katrina. The federal investigation of his administration was mushrooming by the time he left office in 2010.

Rafael Goyeneche, head of the nonprofit watchdog agency the Metropolitan Crime Commission, remembers Nagin entering office with a call for the public to let authorities know about corruption.

“To go from the mandate that he was elected with to reading this indictment today and finding out that he was in many respects, if these allegations are true, a complete fraud, is eye-opening,” Goyeneche said Friday.

In inauguration remarks May 6, 2002, Nagin promised a City Hall “where permits and licenses are provided quickly, predictably and honestly; where contracts are awarded based on what you can do, not who you know.”

Soon afterward, his administration’s probe into alleged corruption in taxi cab regulation resulted in numerous arrests.

“We’re basically trying to send the signal … that what has happened in the past, and the way people played in the gray areas, is no longer acceptable,” Nagin said at the time. “We need to get in step with what’s done in the rest of the country.”

Friday’s indictment accuses Nagin of accepting more than $160,000 in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family business in exchange for promoting the interests of a local businessman who secured millions of dollars in city contract work after the 2005 hurricane. The businessman, Frank Fradella, pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit bribery and has been cooperating with federal authorities.

Nagin, 56, also is charged with accepting at least $60,000 in payoffs from another businessman, Rodney Williams, for his help in securing city contracts for architectural, engineering and management services work. Williams, who was president of Three Fold Consultants LLC, pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to a conspiracy charge.

The indictment also accuses Nagin — who now lives in Frisco, Texas — of getting free private jet and limousine services to New York from an unidentified businessman who owned a New Orleans movie theater. Nagin is accused of agreeing to waive tax penalties that the businessman owed to the city on a delinquent tax bill in 2006.

When two young Canadian girls put a message in a bottle into the St. Lawrence River in Quebec in 2004, they probably didn’t expect it to be found by a 10-year-old boy almost 2,500 miles away.

According to the BBC, Oisin Millea, a 10-year-old boy from Passage East in Ireland, discovered the plastic bottle on the beach near his home village while he was surveying the aftermath of a recent flooding last Thursday. Inside was a hand-written note in French signed by two girls, Charlaine and Claudia.

“I thought it was just rubbish. So I picked it up, looked in the bottle and then I opened it,” Millea told CBC Montreal.

He added, “There was loads of stuff washed up. I thought there was just a label inside this bottle but when I saw the hair band used to keep it together, I opened it up,” according to AFP.

At first Millea had trouble deciphering the note, which had been stuffed into a green two-liter plastic bottle.

“I tried to read it and I thought it was in Spanish, and then I found out it was in French,” Millea told CBC Montreal.

According to the Edmonton Journal, after a little help from Google translate, Millea was able to read the letter.

“06/2004.Hello, we are two girls who had the idea to launch a bottle into the sea. We are called Charlaine and Claudia. We are both 12 and we live in Montreal. We are on vacation in the Gaspésie, in the village of Grande Vallée. We had the idea to launch a bottle into the sea because we saw a TV show about young people putting messages in bottles. If you find our bottle, tell us when and how you found our bottle. Also tell us your name, age, place of residence. Example: Paris, Miami, etc.

To finish, if you don’t have Internet, go to a friend’s or go to an Internet café because we are very curious to know if our bottle was found.

— Charlaine and Claudia”

The letter also included an email address to contact the girls. However, when Millea and his family attempted to send an email, the address was no longer active.

According to UPI, Millea then took his letter to a local newspaper. Armed with only the first names of the mysterious letter senders, Millea wasn’t sure he would be able to find the two Canadian girls.

Thanks to social media, though, the story quickly went viral. It was eventually covered by a Montreal newspaper where Charlaine and Claudia saw a headline searching for them.

The girls — Claudia Garneau and Charlaine Dalpe — are now both 20. They were able to get in touch with Millea through the newspaper and set up a meeting over Skype.

“It’s a bit unreal,” Dalpé told the Edmonton Journal. “It’s really special, like something you see in the movies. You don’t expect something like this to happen for real.”

According to CBC Montreal, Tourism Ireland also took note of the story and offered the women a free week-long trip to Ireland, during which they will be able to see their 8-year-old message again.

Millea’s mother, Aoife, said finding the letter was the perfect catch for her son.

“Ever since he was a young boy, he has searched the beach and area for treasure,” she told the Edmonton Journal. “This is his treasure.”

Now Millea plans to send his own message in a bottle — and who knows where it might end up.

October 25, 2012

A mother returned home to her luxury Upper West Side apartment on Thursday evening to find two of her children, a 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, fatally stabbed in a bathtub by the family’s nanny, the authorities said. The nanny herself lay on the floor, near a bloody knife, with an apparently self-inflicted slash to her own throat.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the mother, Marina Krim, had left her apartment a block from Central Park at 57 West 75th Street to take one of her children, a 3-year-old girl, to a swimming lesson. The two other children were left with the nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, 50.

When Ms. Krim returned around 5:30 p.m., the commissioner said, she found a dark apartment. She went back down to the lobby to ask the doorman if he had seen the nanny and her children. When told that they had not left the building, she returned to the apartment. She looked around in the quiet rooms. Finally, she turned the lights on in the bathroom — and discovered her two children in the bathtub and the nanny unconscious on the floor.

“There were bloodcurdling screams from a woman,” said Rima Starr, who lives down the hall from the victims’ second-floor apartment. Ms. Starr also recognized a man’s screaming voice as that of the building superintendent. The screams prompted neighbors to call 911. Ms. Ortega was arrested as soon as the police arrived. She was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was in critical but stable condition.

According to the police, Ms. Krim and her husband, Kevin, had three children — Nessie, the 3-year-old who lived, and Lucia and Leo. Ms. Krim wrote a blog where she documented “life with the little Krim kids” and showed them in photos around New York City, eating Gray’s Papaya hot dogs, pretending to use a pay phone, napping on the sofa and picking pumpkins.

On the Upper West Side, with its dual-income families in which nannies are often an integral part of children’s lives, pushing strollers or walking their charges by the dozens home from school in the afternoon, the news of the double killing was met with stark disbelief.

“It’s family-oriented, this neighborhood,” said Pauline Sklar, a real estate investor who lives a block from the building where the children were stabbed. “Parents are working. They have to depend on people. My niece hires people. She researches them.”

Ms. Sklar paused, then added, “Or tries to.”

Nannies are there for meal times, for bedtime, for birthdays and holidays, and go on vacations. Indeed, on her blog, Ms. Krim described how she and her family had spent several days visiting Ms. Ortega’s family in the Dominican Republic, speaking to just how close her relationship had been with the family.

“We spent the past 9 days in the Dominican Republic. We spent half the time at our nanny, Josie’s sisters home in Santiago,” she wrote. “We met Josie’s amazing familia!!! And the Dominican Republic is a wonderful country!! More pics to come!!”

Commissioner Kelly said that given the horror Ms. Krim had just witnessed, it was difficult for her to communicate. Mr. Krim was told of the situation hours later, when he landed after a flight back to the city. He was met at the airport by the police, who told him what happened and took him to see his wife at St. Luke’s Hospital, where the couple remained on Thursday night, along with Ms. Krim’s sister.

There were no immediate explanations for what drove the nanny’s actions. Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, said he did not know if she left a note behind, and he could not immediately say how long she had worked for the family. The Krims moved to New York from California in recent years, neighbors said.

A Harvard graduate, according to his LinkedIn profile, Mr. Krim is an executive at CNBC and had previously worked at Bloomberg and Yahoo.

Ms. Krim had worked in California for a wholesaler of powders made from exotic fruits, like acai berries and pomegranates, according to her LinkedIn profile.

A neighbor said that in New York, Ms. Krim largely devoted her time to her children. This past year she taught a weekly early-childhood art class at the Hippo Playground Parkhouse on 91st Street.

“Marina likes strolls in Central Park, doing art projects with the kids and delicious food,” according to a Web site set up for the wedding of one of Ms. Krim’s siblings.

In one post on her blog, Ms. Krim talked about how she cherished her time with her youngest, Leo, nicknamed Lito.

“One of the best parts of my day is after I drop both girls off at school and have 3 precious hours with little Lito all to myself. Ok, I’m near getting cheesy I adore this boy so much!!! He’s obsessed with collecting acorns he finds ‘on the floor,’ he loves riding ‘the school bus’ and he happily plays by himself for long periods of time. Here he has set up his kitchen in the living room and is ‘making bacon’ (not sure where he learned the word ‘bacon’).”

Ms. Ortega lives a few miles away, on Riverside Drive in Harlem. Marcelina Lovera, a neighbor of Ms. Ortega, said she had moved to New York from the Dominican Republic. She had not been officially charged as of Thursday night.

“I’m still shocked,” Ms. Lovera said. “She seems like a normal person. I wouldn’t expect that from her.”

Outside Ms. Ortega’s apartment, a woman could be heard through the closed door wailing, “Porque dios mio, porque?”

Neighbors said she lived with her three sisters and had an adolescent son. They described her as industrious and unremarkable. All expressed disbelief that she could commit a crime so heinous.

On the Upper West Side, neighbors described seeing Ms. Krim, a towel over her head, clinging to her one surviving child, being escorted by the police to a waiting ambulance.

Ms. Starr said that when she saw Ms. Krim in the building’s lobby, she was in a state of shock. “She was screaming in a psychotic state,” she said. “She was not lucid.”

Ms. Starr said she did not know her neighbor well but described a young, loving couple, often seen on neighborhood streets with a big, friendly greyhound named Babar.

She had seen Ms. Ortega in the building, she said, but never got the sense of anything being out of the ordinary.

“I rode in the elevator with the nanny just the day before yesterday,” Ms. Starr said. “I was making small talk. She was sort of unfriendly, didn’t want to interact. But I didn’t notice anything strange or weird.”

A New York City policeman has been arrested for an alleged plot to kidnap women, rape and torture them and then cook and eat their body parts.

The FBI says Gilberto Valle emailed an unidentified co-conspirator to discuss details of the ghoulish plan.

No women were hurt, officials say, but Mr Valle, 28, allegedly used police databases to gather information on a list of potential victims.

He was assigned to a police precinct in Manhattan and lives in Queens.

The officer is expected to appear in a federal court to face kidnapping charges on Thursday.

‘Meeting potential victim’

Federal officials say they learned about Mr Valle’s plan in September after he discussed it on emails and instant messages from his home computer.

According to the complaint, he and his co-conspirator discussed using chloroform to make victims lose consciousness, before bringing them back to Mr Valle’s kitchen.

“I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus… cook her over low heat, keep her alive as long as possible,” Mr Valle wrote in one online exchange in July, says the complaint.

He met one potential victim over lunch, say the authorities.

His co-conspirator allegedly asked him: “How was your meal?” to which Mr Valle is said to have replied: “I am meeting her.”

The complaint alleges that the accused negotiated in February to kidnap another woman for someone else, writing: “$5,000 and she’s all yours.”

It says he added: “I will really get off on knocking her out, tying up her hands and bare feet and gagging her. Then she will be stuffed into a large piece of luggage and wheeled out to my van.”

A search of his computer allegedly revealed files kept on at least 100 women, each with a name and photograph and often personal details such as addresses and descriptions.

“The allegations in the complaint really need no description from us. They speak for themselves,” FBI acting assistant director Mary Galligan said in a statement.

Chief Manhattan federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said: “This case is all the more disturbing when you consider Valle’s position as a New York City police officer and his sworn duty to serve and protect.”

Chrisann Brennan was one of Steve Jobs’s first serious loves, his high school girlfriend and the mother of his daughter Lisa. Now Ms. Brennan will tell the story of her relationship with Mr. Jobs, the Apple co-founder who died in 2011, in a new memoir to be published next year. St. Martin’s Press, part of Macmillan, said on Thursday it had acquired the rights to an untitled memoir by Ms. Brennan, who is now a painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

After meeting him at Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif., Ms. Brennan later lived with Mr. Jobs in a cabin, meditated with him and attended lectures. “At 17, Steve had more than a touch of the cool sophistication of a Beat poet,” Ms. Brennan wrote in an article in Rolling Stone after his death. While in her early 20s, she became pregnant and gave birth to their daughter, who is known as Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Mr. Jobs initially denied paternity of his daughter but later developed a closer relationship with her.

St. Martin’s said Ms. Brennan’s memoir would cover a range of subjects, including her relationship with Jobs, the founding of Apple and “Jobs’s enormous appeal, energy and drive as well as his developing ambition and ruthlessness in business and personal dealings.”

Nikki Yanofsky is a 18‐year‐old musical prodigy. Since her debut at the 2006 Montreal International Jazz Festival, where she won the hearts of the 100,000+ people in the audience, Nikki has never looked back.

Accomplishments early in her career were plentiful, including recordings, performances and accolades. At 13, she was the youngest singer ever on a Verve Records Release with “Airmail Special,” released on the Ella Fitzgerald tribute album We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song. On her 14th birthday, she began a collaboration with Marvin Hamlisch with a performance at Carnegie Hall and continued on a North American tour performing with many esteemed orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra. She recorded “Stompin’ at the Savoy” with Grammy Award‐winning artists Herbie Hancock and Will.i.am for Kareem Abdul‐Jabbar’s audio book, On the Shoulders of Giants. She even reached into the realm of pop music, recording “Gotta Go My Own Way” for Disney’s DVD release of their smash hit High School Musical 2 as well as recording the opening title for PBS’ current version of The Electric Company with renowned hip‐hop artist Wyclef Jean. She was a featured judge on the youth talent show The Next Star in Canada and was a featured performer on the PBS show From the Top in the US. All of these performances culminated in the 2008 release Ella… Of Thee I Swing – a live CD/DVD package recorded in Montreal. Garnering critical acclaim and certified gold, it earned Nikki two Juno nominations: New Artist of the Year and Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

In 2010, Nikki was a featured artist at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games held in Vancouver. Performing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics as well as the opening ceremony of the Paralympics, she was introduced to a world‐wide audience. Nikki was also chosen to sing “I Believe,” the anthem for Canadian spirit during the Winter Olympic Games, which quickly became a #1 hit in Canada. The single had the highest first‐week sales of any Canadian artist in SoundScan history and was certified quintuple‐platinum, making Nikki the youngest artist to ever achieve this sales level. As “I Believe” was at the top of the iTunes Canada Pop Singles charts, Ella… of Thee I Swing went back to the top of the iTunes Canada Jazz Albums Chart and “I Got Rhythm” went to the top of the iTunes Canada Jazz Singles Chart. This was the first time since the inception of digital downloading that any artist has held these #1 positions concurrently.

Throughout her career, Nikki has used her budding fame to help the underprivileged – becoming an ambassador for the Montreal Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Wish Foundation and MusiCounts. Nikki also recently joined her fellow Canadian artists in recording K’Naan’s hit song “Wavin’ Flag” for Young Artists for Haiti. Being sold on iTunes as a single and video, the proceeds have directly impacted the lives of children, families and communities in Haiti through the relief and rebuilding efforts of Free the Children, War Child Canada and World Vision Canada. The local, national and international charity events that Nikki has been involved with to date have raised well over $10 million.

The anti-Muslim film implicated in mob protests against U.S. diplomatic missions in the Mideast received logistical help from a man once convicted of financial crimes and featured actors who complained that their inflammatory dialogue was dubbed in after filming.

The self-proclaimed director of “Innocence of Muslims” initially claimed a Jewish and Israeli background. But others involved in the film said his statements were contrived as evidence mounted that the film’s key player was a southern Californian Coptic Christian with a checkered past.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles Wednesday that he managed logistics for the company that produced “Innocence of Muslims,” which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad.

The movie has been blamed for inflaming mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya this week as well as U.S. Embassy in Yemen on Thursday.

Nakoula denied he had directed the film, though he said he knew the self-described filmmaker, Sam Bacile. But the cellphone number that the AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where Nakoula was located.

Nakoula told the AP he is a Coptic Christian and supported the concerns of Christian Copts about their treatment by Muslims.

The film was implicated in protests that resulted in the burning of the U.S. consulate Tuesday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi. Libyan officials said Wednesday that Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other embassy employees were killed during the mob violence, but U.S. officials now say they are investigating whether the assault was a planned terrorist strike linked to Tuesday’s 11-year anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Nakoula denied he had posed as Sam Bacile. Federal court papers filed in a 2010 criminal prosecution against him said Nakoula had used numerous aliases in the past. Among the fake names, the documents said, were Nicola Bacily and Erwin Salameh.

During a conversation outside his home, Nakoula offered his driver’s license to show his identity but kept his thumb over his middle name, Basseley. Records checks by the AP subsequently found that middle name as well as other connections to the Bacile persona.

The AP located Bacile after obtaining his cell phone number from Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who had promoted the anti-Muslim film in recent days on his website. Egypt’s Christian Coptic populace has long decried what they describe as a history of discrimination and occasional violence from the country’s Arab majority.

Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla., who sparked outrage in the Arab world when he burned Qurans on the ninth anniversary of 9/11, said he spoke with the movie’s director on the phone Wednesday and prayed for him. Jones said he has not met the filmmaker in person, but added that the man contacted him a few weeks ago about promoting the movie. Jones and others who have dealt with the filmmaker said Wednesday that Bacile was hiding his real identity.

“I have not met him. Sam Bacile, that is not his real name,” Jones said. “I just talked to him on the phone. He is definitely in hiding and does not reveal his identity. He was quite honestly fairly shook up concerning the events and what is happening. A lot of people are not supporting him. He was generally a little shook up concerning this situation.”

The Youtube account, “Sam Bacile,” which was used to publish excerpts of the provocative movie in July, was used to post comments online as recently as Tuesday, including this defense of the film written in Arabic: “It is a 100 percent American movie, you cows.”

Nakoula, who talked guardedly about his role, pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Leigh Williams said Nakoula set up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers; then, checks from those accounts would be deposited into other bogus accounts from which Nakoula would withdraw money at ATM machines.

It was “basically a check-kiting scheme,” the prosecutor told the AP. “You try to get the money out of the bank before the bank realizes they are drawn from a fraudulent account. There basically is no money.”

American actors and actresses who appeared in “Innocence of Muslims” issued a joint statement Wednesday saying they were misled about the project and alleged that some of their dialogue was crudely dubbed during post-production.

In the English-language version of the trailer, direct references to Muhammad appear to be the result of post-production changes to the movie. Either actors aren’t seen when the name “Muhammad” is spoken in the overdubbed sound, or they appear to be mouthing something else as the name of the prophet is spoken.

“The entire cast and crew are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer,” said the statement, obtained by the Los Angeles Times. “We are 100 percent not behind this film and were grossly misled about its intent and purpose. We are shocked by the drastic rewrites of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred.”

One of the actresses, Cindy Lee Garcia, told the Gawker.com website that the film was originally titled “Desert Warriors” and said the script did not contain offensive references to Islam. She said the director, who identified himself as Bacile, told her then that he was Egyptian.

The person who identified himself as Bacile and described himself as the film’s writer and director told the AP on Tuesday that he had gone into hiding. But doubts rose about the man’s identity amid a flurry of false claims about his background and role in the purported film.

Bacile told the AP he was an Israeli-born, 56-year-old, Jewish writer and director. But a Christian activist involved in the film project, Steve Klein, told the AP on Wednesday that Bacile was a pseudonym and that he was Christian.

Klein had told the AP on Tuesday that the filmmaker was an Israeli Jew who was concerned for family members who live in Egypt.

Officials in Israel said there was no record of Bacile as an Israeli citizen.

When the AP initially left a message for Bacile, Klein contacted the AP from another number to confirm the interview request was legitimate; then Bacile called back from his own cell phone.

Klein said he didn’t know the real name of the man he called “Sam,” who came to him for advice on First Amendment issues.

About 15 key players from the Middle East — people from Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan and Iran, and a couple of Coptic Christians from Egypt — worked on the film, Klein said.

“Most of them won’t tell me their real names because they’re terrified,” Klein said. “He was really scared and now he’s so nervous. He’s turned off his phone.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, said Klein is a former Marine and longtime religious-right activist who has helped train paramilitary militias at a California church. It described Klein as founder of Courageous Christians United, which conducts protests outside abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques.

It quoted Klein as saying he believes that California is riddled with Muslim Brotherhood sleeper cells “who are awaiting the trigger date and will begin randomly killing as many of us as they can.”

In his brief interview with the AP, Bacile called Islam a cancer and said he intended the film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

But several key facts Bacile provided proved false or questionable. Bacile told the AP he was 56 but identified himself on his YouTube profile as 74. Bacile said he is a real estate developer, but Bacile does not appear in searches of California state licenses, including the Department of Real Estate.

Hollywood and California film industry groups and permit agencies said they had no records of the project under the name “Innocence of Muslims,” but a Los Angeles film permit agency later found a record of a movie filmed in Los Angeles last year under the working title “Desert Warriors.”

A man who answered a phone listed for the Vine Theater, a faded Hollywood movie house, confirmed that the film had run for a least a day, and possibly longer, several months ago, arranged by a customer known as “Sam.”

Google Inc., which owns YouTube, pulled down the video Wednesday in Egypt, citing a legal complaint. It was still accessible in the U.S. and other countries.

Klein told the AP he vowed to help make the movie but warned the filmmaker that “you’re going to be the next Theo van Gogh.” Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a film that was perceived as insulting to Islam.

“We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen,” Klein said.

The arrest of an anti-corruption cartoonist in India on charges of sedition has sparked criticism.

Aseem Trivedi was held in the city of Mumbai over the weekend for his cartoons allegedly mocking the Indian constitution.

He was also charged with insulting the national flag and remanded in police custody until 16 September.

The cartoonist has been participating in the anti-corruption movement led by campaigner Anna Hazare.

India’s media and prominent citizens have condemned Mr Trivedi’s arrest, calling it a “wrongful act”.

“From the information I have gathered, the cartoonist did nothing illegal and, in fact, arresting him was an illegal act,” Chairman of the Press Council of India Markandey Katju told The Hindu newspaper.

“A wrongful arrest is a serious crime under the Indian Penal Code, and it is those who arrested him who should be arrested.”

Mr Katju, a former Supreme Court judge, asked how drawing a cartoon could be considered a crime and said politicians should learn to accept criticism.

“Either the allegation is true, in which case you deserve it; or it is false, in which case, you ignore it. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable in a democracy,” he said.

Senior journalist and the editor of CNN-IBN news channel Rajdeep Sardesai said he found it “amusing, but also very dangerous that you can get away with hate speech in this country, but parody and political satire leads to immediate arrest”.

A former senior police officer and lawyer YP Singh told the Mint newspaper that from “what I have heard, it seems he [Mr Trivedi] can be booked at the most under a law to prevent insults to national honour and not on serious charges like sedition, which attract much harsher punishment”.

If proved, a sedition charge can invite a three-year prison term in India.

The micro-blogging site Twitter was also full of messages criticising Mr Trivedi’s arrest.

Police held him acting on a complaint by a Mumbai-based lawyer who said his cartoons were anti-India.

Earlier this year, a website carrying Mr Trivedi’s anti-corruption cartoons was banned by the police in Mumbai, reports say.

In April, Indian police arrested a professor in Calcutta for allegedly posting on the internet cartoons ridiculing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He was later released.

A Somali Olympic athlete has reportedly drowned while attempting to reach Europe on a migrant boat.

Runner Samia Yusuf Omar was trying to cross from Libya to Italy in April when the boat she was travelling in sank, according to Italian media.

The head of Somalia’s National Olympic Committee confirmed to the BBC that she had died but did not say how.

Samia competed in the 200m event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 despite having almost no formal training.

Although she came in last place, several seconds behind the other competitors, the BBC’s Alan Johnston in Rome says it is extraordinary that she was able to take part at all.

She had grown up and trained in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, facing war, poverty, a complete lack of athletics facilities and prejudice from some quarters against women participating in sports.

According to a profile of Samia on al-Jazeera, she faced death threats and intimidation when she returned to Somalia after the 2008 Olympics, with the Islamist militia al-Shabab controlling parts of the capital.

‘We will not forget’

In October 2010, the runner is reported to have moved to Ethiopia in search of a coach to help her train for the London 2012 Olympics.

What happened between then and her apparent death in the Mediterranean Sea is unclear.

According to al-Jazeera, there were no guarantees that she would be accepted to train at the stadium in Addis Ababa – it was dependent on her running times and permission from the Ethiopian Athletics Federation.

Reports in Italian media suggest she may have been hoping to find a coach in Europe who could help her reach the London Olympics.

Italian newspaper Corriere Della Serra says Samia’s fate only came to light when former Somali Olympic athlete Abdi Bile brought it up at a talk.

He mentioned Mo Farah, the Somalian runner who moved to the United Kingdom aged 12 and triumphed in this year’s Olympics.

“We are happy for Mo – he is our pride,” he said. “But we will not forget Samia.”

August 17, 2012               11:35 PM

Brandon Weeden has taken shots on and off the field through two preseason games. He’s still standing.

Weeden said he was surprised to feel fine Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours after Green Bay Packers cornerback Brandian Ross blasted him in the chest. The hit didn’t force Weeden out of the game, but he clearly was shaken up.

“I just lost my breath,” Weeden said Friday after the Browns got some light work done during a short practice. “I tried to call the next play in the huddle, and I couldn’t even spit out a word. I’d try to imitate it, but I’d make a fool of myself. It was bad. The offensive line was laughing at me. I called the wrong direction. I was hurting there for a second, but I feel good today. I feel 100 percent healthy.”

Right before he absorbed the blow, Weeden got rid of the ball and completed an 8-yard pass to wide receiver Jordan Norwood on third-and-5 from the Browns’ 29-yard line.

“You don’t want to put yourself in that position, but every once in a while you’re going to step into a throw like that,” Weeden said.

Weeden took 40 snaps and played the entire first half in the Browns’ 35-10 preseason win over the Packers. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 118 yards, led the Browns on four scoring drives (a touchdown and three field goals) and finished without a turnover.

It was a significant improvement over his performance in the Browns’ exhibition opener Aug. 10 against the Detroit Lions. Weeden took 15 snaps in his NFL debut, completed 3-of-9 passes for 62 yards, threw an interception, lost a fumble and failed to produce a scoring drive.

The shots off the field followed. Weeden said he read a bunch of criticism from fans on Twitter.

“You can’t really grade an outcome of a game over nine passes, much less 15 plays and especially [since] it was my first-ever NFL start,” said Weeden, 28, who spent five seasons in minor-league baseball before pursuing a football career at Oklahoma State University. “You’ve got to keep that in mind. Regardless of how old I am, it’s still a big jump from college football.

“I don’t listen to [criticism] fortunately. I’ve been there. I’ve played the baseball thing. I didn’t listen to it then. I didn’t listen to it in college, and I’m going to continue to not listen to it. But I think [the fans] want a winner and so do I. I want to win games just as much as they do and for that to happen, I’m going to have to play well.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Weeden was better in his second NFL game, but he still has a lot of work to do.

“There were a couple of progressions there that I think Brandon could be better,” Shurmur said. … “He’ll be better with that the next time, but for the most part he led us on a touchdown drive and did some other things better than he did in the first game. As you work your way through the preseason, training camp and the games, you just want to see steady improvement, and I think I saw that from him.”

Developing chemistry

Weeden, of course, will only benefit once he’s on the same page with his wide receivers. He said he’s getting there with Greg Little.

His connection with rookie Josh Gordon is another story.

In both of the Browns’ exhibition games, Gordon didn’t break to the ball hard enough on hook routes. The sloppy technique gave Lions cornerback Dwight Bentley and Packers cornerback Casey Hayward prime chances for interceptions, though both had drops.

“The route with Gordon — I talked to him before the game, during the game and after the game about certain things I see I think he can do,” Weeden said. “I’m not a receivers coach, so I don’t know how to tell him to run a route, but [I can tell him] what I’m thinking as far as when I’m going to pull the trigger.

“I think that’s the main thing — the timing of that route. The DB made a great play on it, but [Gordon] was a yard or two long. If he runs it at the right depth, maybe it’s a completion versus almost a pick-six. It’s getting on the same page.”

Weeden is urging Gordon to step up because his development is vital for the offense.

“They’re throwing him in the fire,” Weeden said. “He’s going to be out there. He’s got way too many tools and he’s way too good of a player to not be on the field. You’ve got to kind of tailor stuff to fit him, what he does well. There’s certain things he does extremely well. We’re going to try to tailor those things to him to put the ball in his hands.”

August 11, 2012

The family Krzyzewski gathered at an Italian restaurant late last week, all 16 of them, as the end to another Olympic basketball tournament drew near. Children crawled under the table. Food spilled. Babies cried.

Mike Krzyzewski, the family patriarch, zoned out the chaos that surrounded him. As coach of the United States men’s national team, as architect of USA Basketball’s resurgence, he knew Argentina waited in the semifinals. His face betrayed his focus, which was not on dinner.

“Just a relaxing night with your family, right?” his middle daughter, Lindy Frasher, said to him.

As Frasher retold the story Saturday, he looked at her, raised an eyebrow and nodded. Mission mode, she called his facial expression.

Krzyzewski will coach in what seems certain to be his final international basketball game Sunday, a gold medal rematch between the United States and Spain. Beyond the 12 men he will lead onto the court at North Greenwich Arena, those closest to him will also be in attendance, and they are all female. They are his three daughters and his wife, Mickie.

He referred to them in one news conference last week, after a female moderator cut one answer off. “I’m surrounded by women,” Krzyzewski joked. “I’m used to being bossed around.”

Surrounded by women, Krzyzewski, of all people. He grew up without a sister, went to an all-boys Catholic high school, attended West Point before it allowed women, served in the Army and became a basketball coach. A men’s basketball coach.

Now, the women in his life, the ones who call his Duke team “our Duke team,” helped him to become both a better coach and an international one. The family traveled to every tournament, as Krzyzewski coached LeBron James and Kobe Bryant by day and returned to his wife and his children and his grandchildren at night. Frasher said that over the years, “We, I don’t want to say, softened him.” She paused. “But we softened him.”

“He would be a nightmare if he had sons,” his oldest child, Debbie Savarino, added.

They saw the gentler Krzyzewski before the Argentina game, when just before tip-off, he looked for his family in the stands. He found his grandchildren and motioned to them, his index finger moving up and down. The kiddo finger, they call it.

Mickie and the couple’s daughters — Savarino, 41; Frasher, 35; Jamie Spatola, 30 — gathered around a banquet table at the team hotel Saturday night and tried not to think about the end. The children were just that back in 1992, when Krzyzewski served as an assistant with the Dream Team at the Barcelona Games. They played checkers in the game room, next to where the future Hall of Famers held their card games every night.

The pressure did not exist then, not with that team, not as the family of an assistant. It felt, Savarino said, “like a big family vacation.”

Over the years, Krzyzewski’s daughters sometimes wondered if he would coach the national team. That became a reality in 2005, when the couple went to Las Vegas on vacation and Jerry Colangelo, chairman of USA Basketball, flew out and took Krzyzewski to dinner.

Mickie joined them for dessert. She knew right away that her husband had broken one family rule, a vote on all major decisions. She knew her husband well enough to know he would not turn the job down.

“People maybe think this is schmaltzy and hokey, but he’s very, very patriotic,” she said. “And very service oriented.”

The family joined Krzyzewski and the so-called Redeem Team for the Beijing Games in 2008. Spatola sat in on meetings, conducted interviews and wrote a book, “The Gold Standard,” based on her father’s USA Basketball experience — a family affair, even in print.

Beijing felt so much different than Barcelona. In 2008, Krzyzewski coached the best basketball players in the world, and if they lost, for whatever reason, the blame would have fallen to the college coach in charge of them.

“I was terrified,” Frasher said. “We felt like my dad’s legacy was on the line.”

The United States played Spain for the gold medal. Normally, in crunch time, Frasher will look to Savarino for reassurance, a “we’re good,” or a “don’t worry.” With two minutes left against Spain, Frasher looked over. “This is really bad,” Savarino told her. Spatola curled up in the fetal position, nearly unable to watch.

When the United States won gold, each player draped his medal around Krzyzewski’s neck. In the stands, his family cried. The family later watched that game together. Krzyzewski explained what had happened on the court. His daughters told him what had happened in the stands.

After the Olympics ended, Krzyzewski did not emphatically say he planned to quit the international job. He met with Colangelo when both happened to be in Chicago for a conference. They ordered deep dish pizza and drank red wine.

“We sat in the hotel lobby,” Colangelo said. “A Polish kid and an Italian kid from Chicago. Two neighborhood guys. That’s how things get done.”

When Krzyzewski signed on for another four years, his family did as well. That meant he would hold Team USA training camps in the summers, meant he would coach the Americans in Turkey in the world championships in 2010. They knew the time it took, the scouting involved, even if to the rest of the world the gig seemed remarkably easy. A reporter asked Krzyzewski last week if coaching all these All-Stars felt like kindergarten.

His family saw the work involved. After the United States toppled Argentina on Friday, Krzyzewski and his staff broke down tape. Mickie said he returned to their hotel room at 5:15 a.m. and paced the room before he went to bed. Serious to the end, apparently. Krzyzewski did join his family for a day of sightseeing; they took in Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.

At a recent team meal, as each player entered, the room broke into applause. USA Basketball’s extended family clapped for Krzyzewski, too. He silenced the room immediately. “Let’s save it,” he said.

Krzyzewski met his wife in Chicago, through a mutual friend. He asked her out the first time he met her. He took her to a Martha Reeves and the Vandellas show. They danced. When he returned to West Point, he wrote her a letter and asked if she would go to a Chicago Bears game on one of his breaks. He later told her that in that instance she was his third choice. They married the day he graduated.

“I used to tell him, I didn’t sign up for this coaching gig,” she said. “I married a soldier. But what I realized is that he’s still a soldier.”

Mission mode throughout.

August 1, 2012               3:50 p.m.

For those looking for a new way of gauging the race between President Obama and Mitt Romney, Twitter has created its own political index, aimed at breaking down user sentiments toward both candidates.

The social media service, working with partners specializing in opinion research and data analysis, will provide a rating of each candidate on a scale of 1 to 100, updated every day.

As shown in the accompanying chart, Obama currently has a 34 rating and Romney 25. As opposed to being a direct evaluation of their popularity among Twitter users, those figures are based on a comparison between the tweets containing references to either candidate and the Twitter universe as a whole.

Topsy, a separate company focused on data analysis, analyzes the approximately 400 million tweets sent daily on all topics, ranking the most positive at 100 and the most negative at 1.

Tweets referring to Romney or Obama either using their Twitter handle or name are evaluated on the scale, then compared with the rest of the gathered tweets. Hashtags and other means of referring to either candidate are excluded by the algorithm. That same algorithm is intended to eliminate the influence of sarcastic or humorous references to the candidates by averaging them in with the rest of the mentions.

“It’s a leap of faith that the left uses sarcasm as much as the right,” Adam Sharp, who runs government, news and social innovation at Twitter, said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

So Romney’s score of 25 means that 24% of all tweets are more negative than those referencing the former Massachusetts governor, and 75% are more positive. Sharp stressed that the score isn’t aimed to be a rating on individual tweets, but instead to serve as a look which percentile the average tweet would fall into.

Twitter is far from representative of the electoral public though, with a recent Pew survey finding that 15% of online adults are on Twitter, with 8% using it daily. And adoption rates of the social network expectedly skew toward the young, with 26% of 18-29-year-olds tweeting, with just 14% of 30-49-year-olds and 9% of 50-64-year-olds joining them.

This, of course, brings up a question of just how useful Twitter’s index can be, but going back to Aug. 2010, there is some correlation between the political index and Gallup’s approval/disapproval polling.

undefined

Sharp said that instead of replacing the likes of Gallup, the index will add to their findings to present a “meaningful window into conversations” that were previously limited to coffee shops and water coolers, providing “texture” to traditional polling methods.

Sharp cited the swift spike in Obama’s index rating following the death of Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011, which at that point generated more tweets than any other news event, as an example of what texture meant. Polling on Obama’s favorability held strong in the following days and weeks. But over the next two months on Twitter, there was more discussion on economic matters than on all national security issues combined, including Bin Laden’s death.

That discussion, Sharp admitted, was limited by an inherent stumbling block in the index’s methodology – the fact that only those tweeting about politics would have their voices heard. Those not tweeting “@MittRomney is the best” or “@BarackObama is the worst” have no influence on the index, regardless of their political beliefs.

Both Obama and Romney’s campaigns have increased their expenditures on digital outreach, with Obama already passing the $16 million he spent on online marketing in 2008, and Romney more than doubling John McCain’s $3.6 million in the same year. Accusations that some of Romney’s spending has been focused on artificially inflating his following on Twitter, which lags behind Obama’s 18 million at 800,000, have been adamantly denied by his campaign.

And any metric of success could prove useful as improvements are made to the algorithm powering the political index, but Sharp said Twitter had no immediate plans to extend the project outside of the presidential race, let alone as part of the company’s efforts to further monetize itself (Pepsi vs. Coke index anyone?).

Along with Topsy, the left-leaning Mellman Group and more conservative North Star Opinion Research partnered with Twitter to build and maintain the index along with ensuring its ideological balance. Topsy will feature additional analysis on the index’s findings as the race goes on.

Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania reacts as she receives her gold medal

30 July 2012                     19:45 GMT

Teenager Ruta Meilutyte wins shock 100m breaststroke gold

Teenager Ruta Meilutyte won Lithuania’s first ever Olympic gold in the swimming pool by beating American Rebecca Soni in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

The 15-year-old, who trains and goes to school in Plymouth, led from the start in the final, holding on to beat the fast-finishing Soni by 0.08 seconds.

Japan’s Satomi Suzuki earned bronze, while Australia’s defending champion Leisel Jones finished fifth.

“I can’t believe it,” Meilutyte told BBC Sport. “It’s too much for me.”

from:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18906960

———————————————————————————————

There will, after all, be an Olympic gold medal to be celebrated by the staff and pupils of Plymouth College. Just hours after Tom Daley, the school’s most famous graduate, failed to claim a medal, Ruta Meilutyte produced the third of three astonishing swims spread over the course of two days to claim gold for Lithuania at the age of 15.

On an unrewarding night for Britain – Liam Tancock, the sole medal hope, faded to finish fifth in the 100m backstroke – the home support were able to claim a victory of sorts in the 100m breaststroke through Meilutyte. She has already been asked about switching allegiance and firmly declined.

Like Daley before her, Meilutyte is on a scholarship at the private school and trains at the same facility in Plymouth, but unlike the poster boy of Team GB she did not arrive in London with any great expectation resting on her young shoulders. Her coach, Jon Rudd, said they would have settled for a personal best and a place in the final. He got both.

It is the second astonishing teenage victory to come in the first three nights in the pool, but in many ways hers is even more remarkable a performance than that of Ye Shiwen, the 16-year-old Chinese who shattered the world record in the 400m individual medley and set a new Olympic mark in the 200m individual medley last night.

Meilutyte, the only female in the Lithuanian swim team, is ranked No 1 in the world in her age group but coming into the Olympics had managed to record only the 14th best time in the world this year. She has now recorded the fastest.

Whereas the raucous atmosphere inside the Aquatics Centre seems to have overawed some of the British swimmers, Meilutyte has thrived. From the moment she touched the water in her heat on Sunday morning she has dominated the event.

She began with a personal best and then in that night’s semi-finals she broke the European record to advance to the final as quickest qualifier.

The rest of the swimming world was all too aware of her by the time she stepped out of the call room last night, clad in her dark green swim hat with the Lithuanian flag on one side. She appeared nerveless; she was unaffected by a false start from Breeja Larson, the American two lanes down, and also unbothered by the few minutes’ wait that followed as the starting mechanism was reset.

Coming down the final 50m she opened up her lead and then held on as Rebecca Soni responded over the closing 15m. She touched 0.08sec quicker than the Beijing gold medallist, hauled herself out of the water and perched on the lane divider waving ecstatically to the crowd.

Meilutyte, whose mother died in a car accident when she was four, arrived in Britain two years ago. Her father had come to Plymouth to work as a carer, seen the facilities at the Leander club in the city and suggested she join him. “It will be good for your swimming,” he informed her.

Her progress under Rudd, who has a stable of impressive young swimmers, has been meteoric. She was understandably taken aback. “It’s too much for me,” she said. “I really can’t say anything. It was hard and difficult. At the moment I can’t speak too much. But it means a lot to me and I’m so proud.” Tears followed on the podium.

The best two British swims of the night came from women too. Caitlin McClatchey and Hannah Miley making finals in the 200m freestyle and the 200m individual medley relay respectively. McClatchey, at her third Olympics, produced her best swim since Beijing, setting the pace in a high-class field for the second semi-final. She led at the final turn, only for Federica Pellegrini to edge past but McClatchey held on to second to finish ahead of Missy Franklin.

The two men in action, Tancock and Robbie Renwick, were both in finals but neither troubled the podium. Renwick will be the more satisfied with his sixth place in the 200m freestyle final amid some stellar performers. It marked an improvement of two places on Beijing.

For Tancock, McClatchey’s partner, it was one better than in 2008 but represents another frustrating failure to transform his dominance over 50m into the 100m. He swum his first world championships in 2005 and it is at world level where his success has come. The 50m backstroke, at which he excels as the world record holder, is not an Olympic event.

Gemma Spofforth completed the last individual race of her career with a creditable fifth in the 100m backstroke behind Missy Franklin. Spofforth will retire after the Games and plans to attempt to climb Everest. She will probably discover Meilutyte waiting for her.

France's Yannick Agnel has taking the spotlight away from Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. (Matt Slocum/Associated Press)

Monday July 30, 2012             08:39 PM

It began with the hype: Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte.

Then the accolades were bestowed upon Lochte after his impressive victory in the 400-metre individual medley, with Phelps kicked to the curb following his dismal effort.

Pundits were quick to crown Lochte “king of the pool.”

But a funny thing happened on the way to Lochte’s coronation. Since his gold-medal victory, Lochte has been reduced to bum-status by those same media types, and Phelps is still trying to find his groove.

All while a 20-year-old French sensation is stealing the spotlight from his more famous rivals.

Someone, apparently, didn’t advise Yannick Agnel his place in the pecking order. He wasn’t supposed to out-Michael Phelps and both Americans to this point.

Yet after three days of Olympic swimming competition, it’s Agnel standing with two gold medals draped around his neck – the first athlete to do so in London.

More impressively, his two victories have come at the expense of Lochte, making one of the American golden boys look downright silly in the last two days.

Agnel embarrasses Lochte

Lochte’s nightmare started Sunday in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. With the help of Phelps swimming the fastest U.S. leg, Lochte had a solid lead as the anchor, only to feel Agnel power past him in the final 25 metres.

“To be able to give France the gold medal in the relay gave him an inordinate amount confidence to build him up,” said CBC Sports analyst Byron MacDonald.

The relay was just the appetizer. The main event was still ahead.

Often described as the glamour race of swimming, the men’s 200m freestyle final on Monday was stacked with a star-studded field.

The event included world champion Lochte, 2008 Olympic silver medallist Park Tae-hwan of South Korea, 400m freestyle Olympic champion Sun Yang from China, and Germany world-record holder Peter Biedermann.

It didn’t matter. Agnel left every single competitor in his dust.

For starters, the kid has the perfect competition of speed and endurance. He was able to get off to a quick start and hold it. Agnel’s “wow” moment came during the final turn, where he pushed off like a torpedo and saw nothing but clear water to the finish.

The Frenchman was 0.79th of a second faster than silver medallists Park and Sun, who both tied for second place.

Lochte didn’t even medal – hence the bum-status from his suddenly growing list of critics.

“He moved into the last turn fast and came out – he almost hydroplaned off the third turn – on his first stroke up off the wall and it was over. He then had all off his legs, all of his energy and the others guys couldn’t match it,” explained MacDonald, who predicted an Agnel victory in CBCSports.ca’s swimming preview.

Not even the great Phelps, the Olympic champion in this event four years ago, could’ve touched Agnel on this day had he chosen to race.

Little attention for Agnel

His sterling performances may leave many wondering why so little attention was paid to him prior to the London Games. Most of that can be attributed to the Phelps-Lochte duel. Another factor is Agnel hasn’t been a major factor on the international scene before the Olympics, with only one world relay silver medal to his credit.

It has nothing to do with Agnel’s ability, just a strategy put together by his coaches. There was no doubt the Frenchman would turn out to be a superstar in the 200, but there was another consideration.

His coaches couldn’t decide whether to put him in the 400 freestyle or the 100 for London. The moment they saw Agnel struggle in the 400 at the 2011 world championships, their next move was obvious.

“They bailed from the 400 and said ‘we’re not going to take on those two guys from Asia [Park and Sun] and we’re going to focus on the 200 and 100. It was a brilliant coaching decision because he didn’t spread himself too thin.”

Agnel has a chance to cement his legacy at the London Olympic if he can win gold in the 100. The race won’t be easy. He needs a similarly great performance to beat out American Nathan Adrian and Australia’s James Magnussen on Wednesday.

But with the way he’s looked so far, his opponents have to be in an uneasy place.

“He’s posed to be dominant,” said MacDonald. “For now he’s the dominant guy in the 100 and 200 free.”

China continued their domination of Olympic diving as world champions Wu Minxia and He Zi easily won the women’s synchronised 3m springboard event.

The nation won all eight events at last year’s world championships and are expected to do the same in London.

Wu and He scored 346.20 to secure Wu her third successive Olympic title, with the United States taking silver and Canada edging Italy for bronze.

Britain’s Rebecca Gallantree and Alicia Blagg, 15, finished seventh of eight.

As the host nation Great Britain were given a guaranteed place in all of the synchronised events.

But whilst the likes of Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield in the 10m platform event would have qualified anyway, 27-year-old Gallantree and Blagg – who finished 15th at last year’s world championships – would otherwise have missed out.

As such they were always expected to struggle, but after the first two rounds they found themselves in fourth place.

But a couple of errors during their more demanding third and final efforts saw them slip down the leaderboard by the end of the five-dive event.

Even so, they were still encouraged by their performance.

“The compulsories [first two dives] were probably the best we’ve ever done so we were really happy with those,” said Blagg.

“It’s my first Games and it was an absolutely incredible experience and the home crowd was amazing.”

Teenager Blagg added: “Hopefully I’ve got many more Games in me to improve on this, and the dives that I’m not confident on.”

Gallantree, who competed in the Beijing Games, will return to action on Friday in the individual competition.

The Leeds-based diver says she will be passing on tips to some of her team-mates ahead of their debuts at these Games.

“It was really fantastic,” she said.

“The result could have been slightly better but there were a lot of positives in there as well.

“We’ll be reporting back to the others that the atmosphere is amazing and to go out there and, no matter what happens, enjoy it.”

It was only one step up the podium for Matt Grevers.

Just a massive one.

The native of Lake Forest, Ill., won his first individual Olympic gold medal. Grevers, a silver medalist four years ago in Beijing, won the 100-meter backstroke, in 52.16 seconds on Monday night at the Aquatic Centre.

Americans went 1-2.

Nick Thoman won the silver in 52.92, and Ryosuke Irie of Japan was third in 52.97.

It was an Olympic record time for 27-year-old Grevers, who also won two relay gold medals in 2008 at the Olympics.

“I feel incredible. It was something I wanted since I was 10 years old. I came so close in ‘08, getting silver,” Grevers said. “When Aaron Peirsol announced his retirement, I knew it was a great opportunity for me to step in those shoes and hopefully get a gold medal and I did it.”

Peirsol won this event in 2008.

Grevers, at first, was looking in the wrong spot for the seats of his mother, father and brother at the swimming venue.

“I think someone upgraded their seats,” he said. “I was looking for them in the top row because that’s where they were. It was empowering for me to see them there with me on the sidelines. It was awesome that I got to celebrate with them at the end. That was not for me, it was for the whole family.”

At first, Grevers did not realize that teammate Thomas had finished second.

“I must be selfish,” he said. “It took me a good 10 seconds to realize he got second and that’s something I should do right away. When I noticed it (on the scoreboard), the moment became that much more special.”

North Korea’s Om Yun Chol joined an exclusive group of weightlifters Sunday who have lifted three times their body weight in the clean and jerk – and in the process won the gold in the first upset of the weightlifting competition at the London Olympics.

According to Om, it was all thanks to the “Great Leader.”

The 20-year-old Om, who stands just 1.52 meters tall, also set an Olympic record when he cleared 168 kilograms in the clean and jerk in the men’s 56-kilogram category – and immediately gave all the credit to late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

“How can any man possibly lift 168kg? I believe the great Kim Jong Il looked over me,” Om was quoted as saying by the Olympic News Service.

Om’s achievement was even more impressive considering he was competing in the “B” group with lower-ranked lifters. Medal contenders generally compete in the “A” group which took place later in the day.

Double world champion and pre-competition favorite Wu Jiangbiao of China had to settle for the silver medal while European Champion Valentin Hristov of Azerbaijan got the bronze.

Om’s record lift was also surprising because he was ranked just 11th in the world in 2011 and the best clean and jerk he registered last year was 156 kilograms at junior worlds.

But the crowd was so supportive of all the lifters that even a North Korean was backed as though he were a Brit.

Om cleared 160 and 165 kilograms on his first two attempts and got the crowd even more riled up when it was announced he would go for the Olympic mark. Om then confidently squatted to grab the bar and, after securing it at his shoulders on the clean, executed a powerful and steady jerk above his head.

“I wanted to lift a big weight and make the other athletes nervous,” Om said.

It worked.

As the “A” group entered the platform at the ExCeL center later Sunday, Wu lifted 133 kilograms in the snatch to gain an 8-kilogram lead over Om. But his 156-kilogram clean and jerk wasn’t enough to beat the North Korean’s total.

Only a handful of lifters have cleared three times their body weight before, including Halil Mutlu and Naim Suleymanoglu of Turkey.

“I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength to lift this weight,” Om said. “I believe Kim Jong Il gave me the record and all my achievements. It is all because of him.”

North Korean athletes routinely heap praise on Kim and the North Korean people whenever they win gold medals.

When weightlifter Pak Hyon Suk won the women’s 63-kilogram division in Beijing four years ago, she said she was “overjoyed” by the fact that she had brought joy to Kim.

Meanwhile, O Jong Ae, who got the bronze in the women’s 58-kilogram class in Beijing, apologized for not doing better.

“I wanted to bring joy to the North Korean people. However, I failed to do so, so I am very sad and sorry,” she said in 2008.

Dana Vollmer after setting a record in the 100-meter butterfly in the Olympic preliminaries on Saturday.

July 28, 2012                8:46 AM

Some swimmers like to pace themselves in the 100-meter sprints by racing only fast enough in the heats to safely qualify for the top 16 and holding a little back in the semifinals so they only have one all-out effort, in the final. Not Dana Vollmer, who proved as much by lowering her American record in the 100-meter butterfly in the Olympic preliminaries on Saturday.

Vollmer shaved 17-hundredths of a second off her record with a clocking of 56.25 to lead all qualifiers at the London Aquatics Centre. Her time also bettered the Olympic record of 56.61, set in 2000 by Inge de Bruijn. Vollmer’s nearest challenger, Lu Ying of China, finished in 57.17. The other American in the event, Claire Donahue, was seventh in 58.06.

The world record is a 56.06, set in 2009 in a polyurethane suit by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, who hasn’t come within a half-second of the record since the buoyant suits were banned in 2009. Sjostrom qualified fourth in 57.45.

Vollmer’s goal is to become the first woman to break the 56-second barrier. Might she achieve that as soon as Saturday night’s semifinals? “Hopefully,” Vollmer said, adding, “I did feel like I was kind of pacing myself and building up to get faster.”

The record that Vollmer broke on Saturday morning, she set in the semifinals at the U.S. trials. She realizes her strategy of not holding back in prelims or the semifinals is not for everyone. “I think some people need prelims to get going and semis to fine tune and then by finals they’re ready to go,” she said. “I like swimming fast in prelims and then fine-tuning instead of holding back.”

The oldest competitor at the 2012 Olympic Games has revealed the extraordinary sacrifices he has made in order to remain a medal contender well past retirement age.

Hiroshi Hoketsu, who will represent Japan in the equestrian discipline of dressage at the age of 71, told Yahoo! Sports how chasing a slice of history and becoming the oldest Olympian in the last 92 years is the result of a fanatical commitment to the sport.

“I have not seen my wife, Motoko, for more than a year,” said Hoketsu, who lives and trains in the German town of Aachen in order to team up with his horse, Whisper, and his Dutch coach. “It is difficult to be away from home for this long as an old man and I owe everything to her patience and understanding.”

Hoketsu will take part in his third Olympics, 48 years after making his debut and finishing 40th as a show jumper on home soil at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Despite continuing to rise at 5 a.m. every day to ride horses, he quit competing and became a successful international businessman for pharmaceutical companies.

After hanging up his business suit and briefcase, Hoketsu still had the itch to compete and entered the world of competitive dressage at his wife’s insistence. At the time, neither predicted his comeback would result in qualification for the Beijing Games four years ago and now the London Games.

Hoketsu credits his performances to dedication and a bond with his mount that he describes as “magical.” He has become a star in his homeland and a poster boy for the elderly.

Although Hoketsu rises early every morning and attacks practice sessions with as much zeal as riders young enough to be his grandchildren, he confesses he does not adhere to the dietary regimen you might expect from an Olympic athlete.

“I eat what I want to eat and drink as much as I want to drink,” said Hoketsu through an interpreter. “People might expect that I am able to participate for so long because I have special habits. But my secret is to have a good life, enjoy yourself and do the things that make you happy.

“Having said that, I am out there riding horses every day for several hours. Then I come back in and do many exercises, to help with my strength, coordination, and, most importantly, my balance.”

Hoketsu is the oldest Olympian since Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn won bronze at the age of 72 at the 1920 Antwerp Games and would ride into the record books if he was able to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.

Such an outcome is unlikely, but don’t rule it out just yet.

“My wife would like for this to be my last year of competition and that will probably be the case,” Hoketsu said. “But I still feel my riding is improving, little by little. That is my motivation. I am a better rider at 70 than I was at 40. Most people can’t tell but my body is getting a little weaker. My horse knows it and she helps me.”

China has taken another step in its campaign to claim the world’s most disputed waters by naming two senior military officers to head a garrison in the South China Sea, days after calling the island community the country’s newest city.

Senior Col. Cai Xihong was named commander of the Sansha garrison and Senior Col. Liao Chaoyi was named its political commissar, state media reported Friday. Sansha, a rugged outpost of just 1,000 people, was formally declared a city on July 20 with a flag-raising ceremony televised live.

The garrison is on an island barely large enough to host a single airstrip, while fresh water comes by freighter on a 13-hour journey from China’s southernmost province. China claims control over most of the South China Sea, portions of which are also claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines and other neighbors.

The Philippines has said it does not recognize the city or its jurisdiction, and Vietnam said China’s actions violated international law.

The China Daily newspaper Friday quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun as saying the garrison will be responsible for defense as well as disaster rescue work for the city. He would not say if combat forces would be stationed there, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

On Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland reiterated U.S. concerns about such “unilateral moves” by China, saying collective diplomacy is needed to resolve competing claims.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry told Xinhua on Thursday that it is within China’s sovereign right to establish the city.

Beijing created the city administration to oversee not only Shansa but also hundreds of thousands of square kilometers (miles) of water where it wants to strengthen its control over disputed — and potentially oil-rich — islands.

China claims virtually the entire South China Sea and its island groups, and its disputes occasionally erupt into open confrontation. The islands, many of them occupied by garrisons from the various claimants, sit amid some of the world’s busiest commercial sea lanes, along with rich fishing grounds and potential oil and gas deposits.

A Northern California mother is raising safety concerns after saying she found an old, rusty razor blade in a bag of Jolly Rancher candy.

Amy Hu says she bought the bag of Crunch N Chew candy at Santa Clara Safeway, and after eating a couple of pieces pulled out a dull 3-inch blade, partially wrapped in white tape.

KGO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/MRmXjB) that candy maker Hershey has not issued a recall. The company issued a statement saying Hershey believes it was an isolated case and accidental.

The package was completely sealed and the wrapper indicates it was manufactured in Brazil. Hershey did not immediately return a phone message and email seeking details Friday.

Hu says she was offered three replacement bags of candy. But as the mother of 1-year-old and 5-week-old girls, she says she is not seeking compensation but rather assurance that the candy is safe.

A local woman will be looking to become the first American, male or female, to win an Olympic gold medal in judo next month.

It’s a tough challenge for any competitor, but for 22-year-old Kayla Harrison, it doesn’t seem that daunting considering the struggles she has already experienced in her life.

Harrison was sexually abused by her former judo coach for three years, starting when she was 12 years old. After years of abuse, she finally pressed charges and her former coach was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

“I think I cried pretty much every day,” said Harrison.

Harrison then moved to Massachusetts six years ago to live and train with the greatest American judoist to date, Jimmy Pedro.

“Emotionally she was scarred and psychologically she was scarred. So, there was certainly difficult times where she broke down and cried or wanted to run away, but we sought out the right assistance and help for her, and we guided her as much as we possibly could to get her back on the right track,” said Pedro.

Pedro is a two-time Olympic bronze medalist and currently coaches Harrison and other athletes out of his gym in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

“Jimmy is the most decorated athlete that US Judo has ever seen,” said Harrison. “He’s won pretty much everything there is to win, besides the Olympics. So, if you wanna be the best, you have to train with the best.”

With the support of Jimmy and his father, Big Jim, Kayla made drastic improvements both personally and as an athlete. Harrison went on to win the 2010 World Championship in Tokyo and is currently ranked fourth in the world in the -78kg division.

Harrison hopes to pursue a career in firefighting after her judo career is over. She got engaged just before the Olympics and currently lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

She will compete for the gold on Aug. 2.

Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes was being treated by a psychiatrist, according to a legal document filed by his attorneys.

The documents reveal that Holmes was under the psychiatric care of Dr. Lynne Fenton and it confirms that he mailed a package to his doctors that authorities have since seized.

Holmes, 24, is accused of going on a shooting spree in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20. Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded.

Investigators are analyzing a notebook believed to be written by Holmes that could be a roadmap to a massacre.

Holmes’ attorneys filed the motion demanding that the court “immediately produce all discovery pertaining to the seizure of the package.”

The attorneys claim that seizing the package was a breach of confidentiality and they accuse the government of leaking the existence of the package to the media.

“The government’s disclosure of this confidential and privileged information has placed Mr. Holmes’ constitutional rights to due process and a fair trial by an impartial jury in serious jeopardy,” his attorneys wrote.

When investigators first found the Holmes package on Monday in the mailroom at the University of Colorado, where Holmes recently dropped out as a neuroscience student, they were so concerned it — like Holmes’ apartment — would be rigged with explosives that they sent in a robot to handle it.

Inside the notebook they reportedly found plans for a massacre, including drawings of a stick-figure gunman mowing down his victims.

Holmes is expected to make his second court appearance on Monday where he will be formally charged for his alleged crimes.

Police from several jurisdictions conducted a search warrant and recovered numerous guns at a home in Crofton, Md., Thursday night after alleged threats referencing the “Joker” were made earlier in the week.

Sources told News4 that Neil Edwin Prescott made a phone call Monday to a co-worker and made a threat toward his employer, a subcontractor for Pitney Bowes, which was ready to fire him.  Sources said he was upset about the prospect of losing his job and that he stated, “I’m gonna load my guns and blow everybody up,” according to a search warrant.

Sources said that a safety alert was issued Monday to police after the phone call. Prescott was fired from his job in Prince George’s County on an unrelated matter.

Sources tell News4’s Pat Collins that Prescott made threats — saying something to the effect of, “You don’ t know who the real Joker is; I am the real Joker.” When Pitney Bowes heard this alleged threat, they called authorities.

Authorities checked a police database and found that Prescott had 13 guns registered to his name. They became concerned, obtained a warrant and searched his home Thursday night. Anne Arundel County Police, Prince George’s County Police and the ATF were involved in the search.

Federal officials say several firearms were removed from the home, including three 9mm handguns, a .357 revolver and several other rifles and shotguns.

Prescott was groggy when police made contact, and was wearing a shirt that read, “Guns don’t kill people, I do.”

He has not been charged, and is being evaluated in a local medical facility.

Police will hold a news conference at approximately 1 p.m. to release more information.

Pitney Bowes issued the following statement:

“The suspect arrested is an employee of a subcontractor to Pitney Bowes. At Pitney Bowes we have clear security protocol and when we had concerns about this individual, we contacted authorities.” A spokeswoman later added, “He has not been on any Pitney Bowes property in more than four months.”

July 22, 2012

A gunman who opened fire on an officer at the end of a stolen-car pursuit was killed in Anaheim’s second fatal officer-involved shooting in two days, authorities said Monday.

The shooting climaxed an incident that began around 11:20 p.m. Sunday, when anti-gang officers spotted a known gang member on probation in what they soon determined was a stolen car, Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said. They were pursuing the vehicle when the driver lost control on on West Guinida Lane, and two men and a woman bailed.

“The officers were in foot pursuit for about a half-block when one male suspect fired at the officers,” Dunn said. “The officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was dead at the scene.”

A gun was found next to the body, he said, adding that the second male suspect was detained, but the female got away, and a perimeter search for her was under way.

It was not immediately determined if the suspect who fired on officers was the gang member on probation, Dunn said.

Two police officers have been placed on paid leave after one of them fatally shot an unarmed man as he attempted to flee on foot in a residential alleyway, police Chief John Welter said Sunday.

The shooting victim, 25-year-old Manuel Angel Diaz of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 7 p.m. Saturday after being shot in the alley a few blocks northeast of downtown Anaheim.

Police described Diaz as a “documented gang member,” and said he was shot after the officers saw three men near a car in the 600 block of Anna Drive, near La Palma Avenue and State College Boulevard. Believing the activity to be suspicious, the officers approached the vehicle, and all three men fled on foot.

The officers chased Diaz and observed him throwing unidentified objects onto rooftops as he ran, Welter said. What led one of the officers to shoot Diaz remained under investigation Sunday, Welter said.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait said he would be asking California’s attorney general to assist in the investigation.

“I’m asking for a full investigation,” Tait said at a Sunday news conference. “Transparency is essential. Whatever the truth is, we will own it.”

The dead man’s sister, Lupe Diaz, said Sunday that her brother was “just hanging out with friends” before the shooting.

“There is no explanation,” Diaz said. “It’s not fair.”

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office already has launched its own investigation independent of Anaheim police’s, said spokeswoman Susan Schroeder, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings that lead to injury or death. At the conclusion of its investigation, the D.A. will either file criminal charges or explain why no charges were filed, she said.

“We don’t release any comment until we’re done investigating and release that full report,” Schroeder said.

As Anaheim city officials held the news conference Sunday afternoon, demonstrators coalesced in the lobby of the Anaheim Police Department headquarters on Harbor Boulevard, chanting messages such as “No justice, no peace,” “Justice for Manuel” and “Cops, pigs, murderers” in front of a row of five police officers.

Anaheim police “are not judge, jury and executioner. Nobody is given their due process,” said demonstrator Theresa Smith, a community organizer whose son, Caesar Ray Cruz, was fatally shot by Anaheim police in 2010.

“My heart is breaking right now for the mother who lost her son last night,” she said. “I’m really hoping we can resolve this in a civil manner.”

Sunday’s news conference came a day after near-rioting by Anaheim residents protesting what they characterized as a series of senseless, unnecessary officer-involved shooting deaths in Anaheim in recent years.

On Saturday, as demonstrators gathered at the scene of the shooting, Anaheim officers fired bean bags and pepper spray into a crowd of protestors. Welter said Sunday the move was in response to “some known gang members” who had begun throwing bottles and rocks at officers.

Also, Welter said a K-9 police dog accidentally escaped from an officer’s vehicle and rushed into the crowd, biting demonstrators in an attack caught on video.

At least one person received medical treatment; it was unclear if anyone else was injured, the chief said Sunday.

“Officers in this situation can’t retreat,” Welter said, defending the officers’ decision to fire at the demonstrators. “If we would have abandoned the scene, we would not be doing our job.”

Welter said some in the crowd seemed to be inciting the violence. Five people were arrested – two unidentified minors from Anaheim and Placentia, plus:

•Gabriel Calderon, 20, of Brea, described by police as a “documented gang member” and arrested on suspicion of public consumption of alcohol and later booked on suspicion of murder and street terrorism stemming from a May 2012 gang-related homicide in Anaheim.

•Jose Armando Herrera, 26, of San Bernardino, arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and described as a “documented gang member.”

•Jose Jaime Aguilar Lopez, 46, of Anaheim, arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and the forceful taking of an individual from the custody of an officer.

“I don’t have a problem with people exercising their First Amendment rights,” Welter said. “I do have a problem when people start throwing bottles and rocks at my officers.”

But Welter apologized Sunday for the K-9 dog that escaped.

“We are extremely sorry for the people who were bit,” Welter said. “The city will be responsible for all medical bills associated with the dog. The canine officer responsible for the dog is devastated by this.”

Also on Saturday night, a trash bin was lit on fire at least three times and rolled into the middle of the street, blocking traffic. Officers removed the bin each time.

Some of that same unrest unfolded again Sunday night. Trash bins were rolled onto the street at least twice, and the fire in one grew so intense that firefighters were called to snuff it out.

On Sunday, city leaders appealed to the community for calm while they continued to look into what happened.

“We will do everything we can to find the truth about what truly happened out there,” Anaheim Councilwoman Lorri Galloway said.

Added the mayor: “As with many people, I viewed the events and was very, very concerned with what I saw.”

SATURDAY’S SHOOTING

Anaheim’s police chief confirmed Sunday the shooting victim on Anna Drive was unarmed. There were no weapons recovered at the scene that could have belonged to Diaz, Welter said.

Welter said he could not immediately confirm how many shots were fired or precisely where Diaz was shot, other than it was in the 700 block of Anna Drive.

The neighborhood surrounding Anna Drive has experienced escalating gang activity, which is why police have been regularly patrolling the area, he said.

Although just one of the two officers shot at Diaz, both were put on paid administrative leave, Welter said. Their identities were not released.

Diaz was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and died at 7 p.m., Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said. The two other men got away, and the car they were standing next to when the officers approached them was impounded, he said.

A 17-year-old who lives in the neighborhood said she saw the shooting from about 20 feet away. She said Diaz had his back to the officer and was shot in the buttocks area. Diaz went down on his knees, and she said he was struck by another bullet in the head. The other officer handcuffed Diaz, who by then was on the ground and not moving, she added.

“They searched his pockets, and there was a hole in his head, and I saw blood on his face,” she said.

(The Register is withholding the girl’s name at her family’s request, because she is a minor and they are concerned for her safety.)

Police reportedly tried to buy any video taken by witnesses on their cellphones, residents said.

Dunn said he didn’t know whether the allegations were true. He said it was unclear whether it’s against Anaheim Police Department policy to do so, but said that the agency would investigate.

In the past, Dunn said, officers have asked for cellphone video as evidence, but he said he didn’t know of instances where officers would pay for it.

Daisy Gonzalez, 16, who identified herself as Diaz’s niece, said her uncle likely ran away from officers when they approached him because of his past experience with law enforcement.

“He (doesn’t) like cops. He never liked them because all they do is harass and arrest anyone,” Gonzalez said Saturday after lighting a candle for her uncle at the scene of the shooting.

SATURDAY’S MELEE

At the scene of the shooting on Saturday, where about 100 demonstrators had gathered to protest, officers shot bean bags and pepper balls into the crowd after some began throwing rocks and bottles at police.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the officers gave any warning, Dunn said.

Yesenia Rojas, 34, who lives in the neighborhood and knew the man as a “good person,” said she was hit by a bean bag, pointing to a red and purple welt on the side of her stomach.

“Why kill this man?” she said.

Rojas said a stroller with her 1-year-old grandson was toppled over and the baby was nearly attacked when the K-9 police dog escaped from its handler.

Throughout the night, police in multiple marked and unmarked squad cars attempted to control the unruly crowd gathered near the shooting scene. Officers cordoned the intersection at East La Palma Avenue and Anna Drive with the same yellow crime-scene tape used by police where the shooting happened.

About 9:30 p.m., an Anaheim police helicopter was observed hovering above the crowd while police on the ground brandished batons and other weapons at the crowd, attempting to keep order.

Some in the crowd reported they had inhaled some of the pepper spray fired by police. Demonstrator Joel Hunt, 21, of Fullerton, who was in the area visiting a friend when the shooting happened, said Saturday night his throat was still burning from the effects of being sprayed.

On Sunday, Elizabeth Aguilar, 19, displayed a welt on her upper right arm where she said she was hit by a bean bag fired by a police officer at close range.

Aguilar said that when the K-9 dog was released on demonstrators, she was struck by a bean bag after trying to hit the dog as it lunged toward a stroller with a baby inside.

Her father was struck three times by bean bags and had to seek treatment at a hospital, she said.

“I thought (the police) are supposed to warn us if they are about to do something like that to clear the crowd,” Aguilar said. “But they just started shooting at us.

“I used to look up to the police when I was a kid,” she added. “But now I have no respect.”

SUNDAY’S PROTEST

On Sunday, about 50 community members and activists staged a march from the scene of the shooting to the Anaheim Police Department’s headquarters about two miles away.

Carrying signs that read “Stop the killings” and “You may be next,” they entered the front lobby of the police station and chanted through bull horns: “No justice, no peace” and “Shame, shame.”

Protesters also created a chalk drawing on the sidewalk outside police headquarters, writing messages such as “Shame on Anaheim P.D.”

“I think when you see a community act up like that and lose their fear of police, it’s a clear sign that they are angry over an injustice,” said demonstrator Doug Kauffman, 24, a Long Beach resident and organizer with the Campaign to Stop Police Violence. “A man was murdered by police on their street. Of course they are angry and are going to protest.”

A line of five police officers stood stoically at a doorway that led to the briefing room where Sunday’s news conference took place.

Just as the meeting was about to begin, Diaz’s family was escorted into the room along with reporters and photographers.

Lupe Diaz, 29, the man’s sister, said her brother was unemployed, but had worked in offices and as a general laborer.

“He was a bright soul. Fun. Caring. He’d never hurt a soul,” she said. “He had such a big heart.”

HISTORY OF COMMUNITY TENSION

Saturday’s shooting was the latest by the Anaheim Police Department, which is under scrutiny for several recent officer-involved shootings.

For nearly two years, families of others who have been fatally shot by Anaheim police in recent years have been holding protests at Anaheim police headquarters each Sunday.

Those protests led city officials last month to order an independent investigation of “major police incidents,” several of which resulted in suspects being killed.

Galloway said Sunday that city officials were still working to find “a truly independent investigator that can find the truth.”

Galloway, who has been on the council for eight years, headed a community initiative that worked to improve conditions in the neighborhood where Saturday’s shooting took place.

She said her heart ached when she saw television footage of a police dog overturning a stroller and bean bags being fired at community members.

“I take this very personally because I know many of the people out there and there are a lot of good people in that neighborhood,” Galloway said. “And I’ve also heard their cries about the rampant crime and the need to clean it up.

“I don’t know the context of what happened out there yet, and that’s why we need to find the truth.”

A minor miracle on the upper deck of New York City’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge may have helped save the life of a suicidal Chinese-American man.

Soon after police responded Monday afternoon to a report of a man who had parked his car on the bridge and gone “over the edge,” they learned that the man spoke only Cantonese. They then summoned Officer Yi Huang, a Cantonese-speaking Chinese-American, to communicate with him.

Huang, who patrols the Fifth Precinct in Chinatown, quickly arrived at the scene and began speaking with the man, who he learned hailed from his hometown: Taishan village in China’s southern Guangdong province.

Huang learned that the man, shown in photographs clinging to a bridge cable at mid-span wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, was “despondent over arguments he had been having with his 18-year-old daughter, and also was upset over finances,” according to a statement from the New York Police Department.

“Officer Huang … spoke of his own family’s experience and asked him to think about seeing his daughter at her wedding, or meeting his grandchildren,” according to the statement.

Huang, who immigrated to Chinatown with his family when he was 4 years old, had to shout to the man from a distance of 10 to 15 feet — if he came any closer, the man threatened to jump, he said. An ominous thunderstorm approached and winds gathered force as the men negotiated for hours, severely backing up traffic to the bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, a group of visitors to Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, at the bridge’s western end, had a clear view of the drama as it unfolded.

Judith Savercool of Middletown, N.J., was eating lunch with her husband at Fort Wadsworth around noon when she noticed the man squatting on the ledge.

“I felt pure panic,” said Savercool. “I personally have two people that I know, friends, who committed suicide. They don’t realize they hurt the people they leave behind.”

Savercool said a prayer circle formed near the overlook as adults and children alike peered through binoculars to get a closer look at the man. The crowd was joined by two construction workers who had been told to leave the bridge as officers continued to negotiate with the man.

Despite heavy rain and darkening skies, Savercool said she could not leave Fort Wadsworth until she saw whether the man jumped or was rescued.

At about 4:30, a streak of lightning flashed above the bridge. Shortly afterward, she said, the man finally walked over the railing to safety.

The man, whose name was not released, was transported to Staten Island University Hospital in good condition, the NYPD said in the release.

Craig Field

July 16, 2012              3:23PM

FORMER NRL star Craig Field has been remanded in custody on a charge of murder following an alleged fight at Kingscliff last night.

Mr Field, 39, and alleged accomplice Shaun Fathers, 41, were both charged with murder this afternoon following the alleged altercation with 50-year-old Kelvin Kane behind the Kingscliff Beach Hotel just before 9pm last night.

Mr Kane died in Tweed hospital this afternoon and Mr Field and Mr Fathers each had their grievous bodily harm charges upgraded to murder.

It is alleged an argument between the two parties inside the pub spilled into the back car park, where a scuffle erupted.

Neither Mr Field nor Mr Fathers, who sat expressionless throughout this afternoon’s court hearing, applied for bail.

The case was adjourned to Lismore court on August 21.

Mr Field, a veteran of 183 first grade rugby league games in Australia, is a Kingscliff local where he works as an electrician.

Field debuted for South Sydney in 1990 and was promoted to captain in 1994.

He also played for Manly-Warringah, Balmain and Wests Tigers.

His career highlights include the 1997 grand final which Manly lost to the Newcastle Knights 22-16 when Darren Albert famously scored the match winning try.

Detectives are continuing with their investigation into the incident and are urging anyone with information that might assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Celeste Holm

July 15, 2012             9:29 a.m.

Celeste Holm, a versatile, bright-eyed blonde who soared to Broadway fame in “Oklahoma!” and won an Oscar in “Gentleman’s Agreement” but whose last years were filled with financial difficulty and estrangement from her sons, died Sunday, a relative said. She was 95.

Holm had been hospitalized about two weeks ago with dehydration after a fire in actor Robert De Niro‘s apartment in the same Manhattan building. She had asked her husband on Friday to bring her home, and she spent her final days with her husband, Frank Basile, and other relatives and close friends by her side, said Amy Phillips, a great-niece of Holm’s who answered the phone at Holm’s apartment on Sunday.

Holm died around 3:30 a.m. at her longtime apartment on Central Park West, Phillips said.

“I think she wanted to be here, in her home, among her things, with people who loved her,” she said.

In a career that spanned more than half a century, Holm played everyone from Ado Annie — the girl who just can’t say no in “Oklahoma!”— to a worldly theatrical agent in the 1991 comedy “I Hate Hamlet” to guest star turns on TV shows such as “Fantasy Island” and “Love Boat II” to Bette Davis‘ best friend in “All About Eve.”

She won the Academy Award in 1947 for best supporting actress for her performance in “Gentlemen’s Agreement” and received Oscar nominations for “Come to the Stable” (1949) and “All About Eve” (1950).

Holm was also known for her untiring charity work — at one time she served on nine boards — and was a board member emeritus of the National Mental Health Association.

She was once president of the Creative Arts Rehabilitation Center, which treats emotionally disturbed people using arts therapies. Over the years, she raised $20,000 for UNICEF by charging 50 cents apiece for autographs.

President Ronald Reagan appointed her to a six-year term on the National Council on the Arts in 1982. In New York, she was active in the Save the Theatres Committee and was once arrested during a vigorous protest against the demolition of several theaters.

But late in her life she was in a bitter, multi-year legal family battle that pitted her two sons against her and her fifth husband — former waiter Basile, whom she married in 2004 and was more than 45 years her junior. The court fight over investments and inheritance wiped away much of her savings and left her dependent on Social Security. The actress and her sons no longer spoke, and she was sued for overdue maintenance and legal fees on her Manhattan apartment.

The future Broadway star was born in New York on April 29, 1919, the daughter of Norwegian-born Theodore Holm, who worked for the American branch of Lloyd’s of London, and Jean Parke Holm, a painter and writer.

She was smitten by the theater as a 3-year-old when her grandmother took her to see ballerina Anna Pavlova. “There she was, being tossed in midair, caught, no mistakes, no falls. She never knew what an impression she made,” Holm recalled years later.

She attended 14 schools growing up, including the Lycee Victor Duryui in Paris when her mother was there for an exhibition of her paintings. She studied ballet for 10 years.

Her first Broadway success came in 1939 in the cast of William Saroyan‘s “The Time of Your Life.” But it was her creation of the role of man-crazy Ado Annie Carnes in the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma!” in 1943 that really impressed the critics.

She only auditioned for the role because of World War II, she said years later. “There was a need for entertainers in Army camps and hospitals. The only way you could do that was if you were singing in something.”

Holm was hired by La Vie Parisienne, and later by the Persian Room at the Plaza Hotel to sing to their late-night supper club audiences after the “Oklahoma!” curtain fell.

The slender, blue-eyed blonde moved west to pursue a film career. “Hollywood is a good place to learn how to eat a salad without smearing your lipstick,” she would say.

“Oscar Hammerstein told me, ‘You won’t like it,'” and he was right, she said. Hollywood “was just too artificial. The values are entirely different. That balmy climate is so deceptive.” She returned to New York after several years.

Her well-known films included “The Tender Trap” and “High Society” but others were less memorable. “I made two movies I’ve never even seen,” she told an interviewer in 1991.

She attributed her drive to do charity work to her grandparents and parents who “were always volunteers in every direction.”

She said she learned first-hand the power of empathy in 1943 when she performed in a ward of mental patients and got a big smile from one man she learned later had been uncommunicative for six months.

“I suddenly realized with a great sense of impact how valuable we are to each other,” she said.

In 1979 she was knighted by King Olav of Norway.

In her early 70s, an interviewer asked if she had ever thought of retiring. “No. What for?” she replied. “If people retired, we wouldn’t have had Laurence OlivierRalph RichardsonJohn Gielgud… I think it’s very important to hang on as long as we can.”

In the 1990s, Holm and Gerald McRainey starred in the CBS’s”Promised Land,” a spinoff of “Touched by an Angel.” In 1995, she joined such stars as Tony Randall and Jerry Stiller to lobby for state funding for the arts in Albany, N.Y. Her last big screen role was as Brendan Fraser‘s grandmother in the romance “Still Breathing.”

Holm was married five times and is survived by two sons and three grandchildren. Her marriage in 1938 to director Ralph Nelson lasted a year but produced a son, Theodor Holm Nelson. In 1940, she married Francis Davies, an English auditor. In 1946, she married airline public relations executive A. Schuyler Dunning and they had a son, Daniel Dunning.

During her fourth marriage, to actor Robert Wesley Addy, whom she married in 1966, the two appeared together on stage when they could. In the mid-1960s, when neither had a project going, they put together a two person show called “Interplay — An Evening of Theater-in-Concert” that toured the United States and was sent abroad by the State Department. Addy died in 1996.

Funeral arrangements for Holm haven’t been made. The family is asking that any memorial donations be made to UNICEF or to The Lillian Booth Actors Home of The Actors Fund in Englewood, N.J.

Two prisoners who disembowelled a fellow inmate at Durham’s Frankland Prison have been given life sentences.

Mitchell Harrison, 23, originally of Wolverhampton, was serving an indefinite term for child rape in Cumbria when he was killed in October.

Michael Parr, 32, and Nathan Mann, 23, cut his neck with a scalpel made from plastic cutlery and a razor blade.

Newcastle Crown Court heard they cut the dead victim’s stomach and planned to eat his liver, but did not do so.

Parr had earlier pleaded guilty to murder and must serve a minimum term of 32 years. He was already serving life for the attempted murder of a hospital patient.

Judge Justice Openshaw

Mann pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 16 years, to run consecutively to the 24-year minimum sentence he is already serving for a double murder.

Harrison was jailed in January 2010 after he admitted raping a 13-year-old girl in Kendal, Cumbria.

He was killed in his cell at the category A facility, which has housed some of the UK’s most high profile and dangerous inmates.

‘Cannibalistic urges’

The court heard that Mann and Parr had expressed “fantasies” about beheading other prisoners and cutting out their stomachs.

Mann was described by a psychiatrist as “a remorseless, callous psychopath” who harboured “cannibalistic urges” and was “one of the most dangerous men in the criminal justice system”.

Sentencing the pair for the “ghastly and gruesome” killing, Judge Justice Openshaw said: “I can’t envisage circumstances in which either of them will ever be released.

“They will face the fact that they may well end their lives in prison.”The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is carrying out an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mitchell’s death.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We take the responsibility of keeping staff, prisoners and visitors safe extremely seriously.

“That’s why we have a violence management system in place to deal with incidents quickly and robustly with serious incidents referred to the police immediately.”

Det Ch Insp Steve Chapman, from Durham Police, said: “Mitchell Harrison was a young man who was by all accounts a model prisoner at HMP Frankland.

“Although his family never condoned his past actions, he was still their much loved son and brother and they were supporting him as he served his custodial sentence.

“His untimely death, and the horrific nature of it, left his family devastated.”

Mitchell Harrison’s family said in a statement: “Our lives have been shattered by Mitchell’s horrific murder. His death was cruel and unnecessary.”

Forget feeling like you only have big shoes to fill for a role. In “The Amazing Spider-Man” Emma Stone takes on the role of Peter Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy, a character who quite literally popped off the comic book page.

“Obviously I’m not as voluptuous or buxom as Gwen in the comic books,” Stone told MTV News. “It was kind of a little bit more brought down to earth.”

Despite the bust adjustment, Stone acknowledges that Gwen’s look in director Marc Webb‘s film adaptation stays close to the character’s style in the comics.

“I had seen a lot of Gwen,” Stone said. “Kym Barrett, the costume designer, I think was really trying to stay true to that, but bring that kind of cartoonish element into it.” Barrett has previously done costume design for “Romeo + Juliet,” “The Matrix” trilogy and last year’s “The Green Hornet,” among others.

Stone also commented on Gwen’s recognizable blond hairstyle that her character dons in the film, describing the black headband and ponytail as “classic Gwen.”

Stone wasn’t the only one who appreciated Gwen’s classic updo. “The Amazing Spider-Man” producer Avi Arad — whom Stone refers to as “the gatekeeper of Marvel” — would be “so happy” when she would have her hair in Gwen’s signature style on set, Stone said.

Stone isn’t the only castmember who has commented on her character’s style for the film to MTV News. Stone’s co-star and Spider-Man himself, Andrew Garfield, also spoke about some of the trouble that came with wearing the iconic blue and red suit and what changes could be made moving forward.

“It’s like you have to body shoehorn yourself out of it,” Garfield said about his suit. “But it looks good.”

A private helicopter that crashed into an Arizona river has killed all four of its passengers on board, sheriff’s officials said Sunday.

The wreckage was discovered early Sunday morning in a remote area approximately 24 hours after the aircraft was reported traveling from Sedona to Scottsdale, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Search crews with the Civil Air Patrol started looking for the Aerospatiale AS350 helicopter on Saturday when it was reported overdue, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Wreckage: A private helicopter that crashed into an Arizona river has killed all four people on board

The wreckage was spotted around 8.45am Sunday by a private pilot south of Camp Verde, Gregor said.

Police reported 70-year-old Raymond Perry of Phoenix piloting the plane when it went down in the river in parts just waist to shoulder-width deep.

Perry, who served as CEO of the area’s Arriba Mexican Grill restaurants, was the owner of the helicopter based in Scottsdale, the sheriff’s office said.

With him were 68-year-old Karen Stinn of Cave Creek and married couple Mike Dunaway, 63 and Linda Dunaway, 63, of Glendale.

Mr Dunaway was a retired Fire Chief in Durango and his wife a former executive director of the La Plata County Humane Society.

A Facebook profile for Ms Stinn reported her working as an Arizona realtor.

Friends and family told ABC15 that Mr Perry was flying his friends to Sedona for breakfast the morning of the crash.

‘This wasn’t unusual. He did this all the time so I didn’t think anything of it,’ one of Mr Perry’s friends Al Cooper told the station.

Other passengers: The other two victims reported in the crash were retired fire chief Mike Dunaway and his wife Linda, both aged 63

Their bodies have been removed from the wreckage and taken into custody by the medical examiner’s office.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators were looking at the wreckage Sunday afternoon to determine what caused the crash.

Camp Verde is about 86 miles north of Phoenix.

Surf movies are going arty. Globe’s latest adventure in the short film hype features everything you wouldn’t expect in a cinematographic story about surfing.

Call 10 Russian top models, add a yellow Lamborghini, mix up with the sands of the desert and get “Electric Blue Heaven”, a conceptual surf film starring Dion Agius in the Al Ain Surf Park Wadi Adventure, famous artificial wave pool of the Middle East.

The plot is simple, yet fascinating. A green-eyed desert goddess arrives at the surf pool and makes waves for our invited surfer. In a matter of moments, perfect clean waves are pumping and the surfer takes the maximum pleasure out of them.

We know we’re in some kind of paradise. While Dion Agius takes off from the lip of the wave, 10 perfect women enjoy themselves in the no man’s land.

Contrast is everything in “Electric Blue Heaven”. Surf filmmaker Joe G shows us the brutal contrasts of the wild dry mountains with the crystal-clear waters of the wave park.

German football star Sami Khedira’s stunning girlfriend has been shown a yellow card – for being too sexy.

Lena Gercke, 24, has been asked by the German FA to tone down her appearance when taking her place in the stand for tomorrow’s Euro 2012 semi-final clash against Italy.

German gossip magazine Bunte reports that national sports chiefs fear the model has overshadowed the other wives and girlfriends during the tournament.

Stunning: Lena Gercke has been asked by the German FA to tone down her appearance when taking her place in the stand for tomorrow’s Euro 2012 semi-final clash against Italy

This had led to bickering between rival WAGS and subsequently lowered morale within the team camp, it said.

And so she has been requested ‘not to hog the spotlight’ before tomorrow’s crucial match, so the focus can be switched back to the beautiful game.

The winner of the Germany’s first Next Top Model contest started dating the Real Madrid ace last year. She was snapped wearing a pair of skimpy shorts at the start of the tournament.

She appeared semi-naked on the German version of GQ magazine alongside her fully-clothed midfield lover, 25, last year.

The couple are set to tie the knot after the championships are over. Khedira is one of ten Real Madrid players to pull on a national shirt in a bid to win a place in the final.

Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal’s Pepe and Fabio Coentrao out against their team mates representing Spain in Donetsk tonight.

Spain will contain Iker Casillas, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos, while Khedira will line up against Italy alongside Mesut Ozil in Warsaw on Thursday.

Khedira is one of a vast majority of the players in Joachim Loew’s 23-man squad that are products of a youth system launched on the back of disappointing tournament results in 1998 and 2000.

He was part of the 2009 Under-21 European championship-winning team.

That team’s triumph completed a rare set of titles as Germany were also European champions in the Under-19 and Under-17 age groups, won a year earlier.

16:00 EST              23 June 2012

My mobile rang. The caller ID said ‘Andrew – Security’, so I thought it must be Amy, who often borrowed his phone.

‘Hello, darling,’ I said. But it wasn’t Amy, it was Andrew, her security guard. I could barely make out what he was saying.

All I could decipher was: ‘You gotta come home, you gotta come home.’

My world drained away from me. ‘Is she dead?’ I asked. And he said ‘Yes.’

Amy learned to walk on her first birthday, and from then on she was a bit of a handful. Janis was a wonderful mother, and still is. Amy and her older brother Alex could read and write before they went to school, thanks to her.

I was a hands-on father but more for rough-and-tumble than reading stories.

Alex and I would play football in the garden, and Amy would want to join in – ‘Dad! Dad! Give me the ball.’ I’d prod it towards her, then she’d pick it up and throw it over the fence.

Despite her charm, ‘Be quiet, Amy!’ was probably the most-heard sentence in our house during her early years. She just didn’t know when to stop.

Once she started singing that was it. And if she wasn’t the centre of attention, she’d find a way of becoming it – occasionally at Alex’s expense. At his sixth birthday party, Amy, aged two, put on an impromptu show of singing and dancing. Naturally, Alex wasn’t best pleased and poured a drink over her.

She would deliberately get herself lost at the vast Brent Cross Shopping Centre in North-West London, causing us to search high and low.

Then there was the choking game. One Saturday afternoon we were shopping in Selfridges. Suddenly Amy threw herself on to the floor, coughing and holding her throat. I knew she wasn’t really choking but she was creating such a scene that I threw her over my shoulder and we left in a hurry.

After that she was ‘choking’ everywhere, friends’ houses, on the bus,  in the cinema.

'Give me a cuddle': Daddy's girl Amy with her father Mitch in 2010‘Give me a cuddle': Daddy’s girl Amy with her father Mitch in 2010.

I was devoted to my family, but as Amy and Alex got older, I was changing. In 1993, Janis and I split up. I waited until after Alex had had his bar mitzvah. Telling them was the hardest thing. Alex took it very badly – who can blame him? – but Amy seemed to accept it.

She started at Ashmole secondary school in Southgate, North London, in September 1994. From the start she was disruptive. Amy was good at maths: she would do mathematical problems for hours on end just for fun. She was brilliant at the most complex Sudoku puzzles and would do them in a flash.
The pity was that she wouldn’t do it at school.

By the time she was 12, Amy wanted to go to a drama school full time. Janis and I were against it but Amy applied to the Sylvia Young Theatre School in Central London without telling us.

How she even knew about it we never figured out. She decided to sing The Sunny Side Of The Street for her audition and she won a half-scholarship.

Hearing Amy’s music is hard . . . I miss her so much it physically hurts

She stayed for three years, but what a three years it was. Sylvia Young herself said that Amy had a ‘wild spirit and was amazingly clever’.

But there were regular ‘incidents’, for example, Amy’s nose-ring. Jewellery wasn’t allowed, a rule Amy disregarded. She was sent home one day when she’d turned up wearing earrings, her nose ring, bracelets and a belly-button piercing.

Along with other pupils from Sylvia Young’s, Amy started getting paid work around the time she became a teenager. She appeared in a sketch on The Fast Show and stood precariously on a ladder for half an hour in Don Quixote at the Coliseum in St Martin’s Lane.

Contrary to what some people have said, including Amy, Amy was not expelled. In fact, Janis and I decided to remove her as we believed she had a better chance with her exams at a ‘normal’ school.

Amy cried when we told her we were taking her away. Sylvia tried to persuade us to change our minds. She stayed in touch with Amy after she’d left, which surprised Amy, given all the rows they’d had over school rules.

Our relationship with Sylvia and her school continues to this day.

From September 2012, Amy’s Foundation will be awarding the Amy Winehouse Scholarship, whereby one student will be sponsored for their entire five years at the school.

Aged two and with her sibling Alex: When Amy stole the show at her brother's party, he threw a drink over herAged two and with her sibling Alex: When Amy stole the show at her brother’s party, he threw a drink over her

Although Amy was smoking cannabis, she had always been against Class A drugs. Blake Fielder-Civil changed that. Amy first met him early in 2005 in a pub in Camden.

It was only about a month after they’d met that she had his name tattooed over her left breast. He became the centre of Amy’s world and everything revolved around him.

I found out later that Blake had been dabbling in heroin when Amy had first met him. As if the drug use wasn’t bad enough, Amy soon found out that Blake was cheating on her with his old girlfriend. Amy ended the relationship but took the break-up hard.

Not long afterwards, Amy and I were walking on Primrose Hill. She loved our walks there. That afternoon I could tell she was miserable. She squeezed my hand. ‘It’s me, isn’t it, Dad? I always pick the wrong boys, don’t I?’

In March 2006, she met the talented young Mark Ronson, a British producer/arranger/songwriter/DJ in New York. She knew very little about him and, on first seeing him, she said: ‘Oh, the engineer’s here.’ Later she told him she’d thought he would be an older Jewish guy with a big beard.

They met again the following day, by which time Mark had come up with a piano riff that became the verse chords to Back To Black.

Fallen star: Amy with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil in June 2007Fallen star: Amy with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil in June 2007

Amy was supposed to be flying home a few days later, but she was so taken with Mark that she called me to say she was going to stay in New York to carry on working with him. Her trip proved fruitful, with Amy and Mark fleshing out five or six songs. Amy would play Mark a song on her guitar, write the chords down and leave him to work out the arrangements.

She told Mark that writing songs about Blake was cathartic and that Back To Black summed up what had happened when their relationship had ended: Blake had gone back to his ex and Amy to black, or drinking and hard times.

In the end, Back To Black was made in just five months. The album astonished me. I knew my daughter was good, but this was something on another level.

Back To Black was released in the UK on October 27, 2006, and during its first two weeks it sold more than 70,000 copies.

It reached No 1 in the UK Albums Chart. By December 2011 Back To Black had sold 3.5 million copies in Britain and more than 20 million copies worldwide.

I was blown away, beyond proud. But deep down I never wanted Amy to write another album like it. The songs are amazing but she went through hell to write them.

Self-destruction: The singer takes a sip of her drink at the Rock in Rio concert in 2008Self-destruction: The singer takes a sip of her drink at the Rock in Rio concert in 2008

I don’t like Back To Black as much as I like her first album, Frank; I never really did. And that’s for one reason only: all the songs on Back To Black, apart from Rehab, are about Blake.

It occurred to me recently that one of the biggest-selling UK albums of the 21st Century so far is all about the biggest low-life scumbag that God ever put breath into. Quite ironic, isn’t it?

While the album’s success altered Amy’s career in every way imaginable, it came with a high price tag. Whereas people might walk along the street humming Love Is A Losing Game, to Amy it was like a knife in the heart, a reminder of the worst of times.

My first impression was that Blake seemed to be a decent guy, if a bit scruffy. I wondered about his age, as his hair seemed to be receding. We had a bit of a chat and he told me that he was working as a video production assistant and wanted to get into pop videos.

In May 2007 Amy and Blake went on holiday to Miami. Before they left she called me. She wanted to know how I felt about her and Blake getting married. I wasn’t too thrilled.

‘You’re both adults,’ I told her. ‘It’s for you and Blake to decide.’

Amy promised me that Janis and I would both be invited. But we weren’t. On May 18 Amy called me, all excited. ‘Dad, we’ve just got married!’

I was stunned into silence.

‘Aren’t you going to congratulate us?’

I couldn’t say anything to her. I pretended I couldn’t hear her properly and hung up. I was beside myself with sadness for Janis.

It was later that year, on the evening of Monday, August 6, when Amy had her first seizure. She was alone with Blake. He put her in the recovery position but instead of calling an ambulance, he phoned Juliette, one of Amy’s oldest friends, who drove her to hospital.

At 11pm, a consultant psychiatrist examined Amy. He said she had ‘just’ taken drugs, probably crack cocaine. He warned her that if she continued, she could have another seizure. I had to sit down before I fell. This was a bombshell. Amy had always been dead against hard drugs. Why had that changed?

Now I knew I’d been wrong in thinking Amy was stronger than Blake. It appeared to be the opposite. As the terrible months that followed were to make clear.

'Not too thrilled': In May 2007 the pair went on holiday... and Amy told her father during a phone call that she and Bake had married in Miami‘Not too thrilled': In May 2007 the pair went on holiday… and Amy told her father during a phone call that she and Bake had married in Miami

We made attempts to install Amy and Blake at the Causeway Retreat in Essex, for rehab. But they left early, choosing instead to check into a £500-a-night suite at the Sanderson Hotel in the West End of London.

I arranged to talk with Blake’s mother, Georgette and stepfather Giles. It was a waste of time: the Civils wouldn’t accept that Blake had introduced Amy to Class A drugs and blamed her for Blake’s addiction.

It was Amy’s 24th birthday on September 14. She wanted to go shopping, just the two of us, at Harrods. I bought her two sweaters that cost £140 each, a big chunk of the money I’d earned that week as a black-cab driver, and we had a really lovely time.

But somehow we got separated. I found out later that she’d jumped into a cab and gone back to the  hotel. When I arrived, I found a drug-dealer in her room and kicked him out.

By now, she was drinking heavily, too. The first gig of her UK tour, at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena, was shameful. She slurred her way through the songs and staggered around the stage. The audience booed and jeered, but instead of walking off, Amy responded, saying: ‘If you’re booing, you’re a mug for buying a ticket.’

Standing at the side of the stage, I could hardly believe this was happening. It didn’t feel like I was watching Amy. I was sobbing and there was nothing I could do.

‘Dad, we’ve got married,’ cried Amy. I couldn’t say anything, I was too sad

When I walked into Amy’s dressing room, she was giving a friend’s mother a £20,000 watch. Why?

Because she was drunk. I cleared the dressing room, and the look on Amy’s face told me everything.
‘Give me a cuddle, Dad,’ she said, like a small child, as if somehow I could make everything right again.

Whenever I could, I saw Amy before a show, to gee her up and make sure she was OK. In November, before a gig at the Hammersmith Apollo, the singer Pete Doherty was with her.

They were sitting on the bed strumming guitars. Doherty was always in the news over drink-and-drugs binges so I didn’t want Amy anywhere near him.

I threw him out. Later, some people said I’d hit him over the head with his guitar. I have no further comment to make, but he did leave the room with his head in his hands.

I resolved that 2008 would be the year we helped Amy get clean. By now Blake was in Pentonville prison, sentenced to nearly three years for his part in a vicious assault on a bar owner. So I felt we had a chance of making it happen.

This was what Universal Records wanted, too. Lucian Grainge, chairman and chief executive of Universal, told me he would not allow Amy to perform. Furthermore, unless Amy went into rehab, he would not allow her to perform at the Grammys or the Brit Awards either.

Golden moments: Amy with her mother Janis during her live broadcast of her Grammy's performanceGolden moments: Amy with her mother Janis during her live broadcast of her Grammy’s performance

His concern was that Amy would make a laughing stock of herself. Lucian laid down the law, instructing Amy that unless she went into rehab he would stop her working.

Resistant as she was to the idea, she agreed to be admitted to Capio Nightingale, a leading private psychiatric hospital in St John’s Wood.

Rest was a crucial part of the  programme for the first few days, and Amy spent quite a bit of time sleeping. She started to eat properly and after a few days made progress.

Amy had an incredible power of recovery, given the quantity of poisonous substances involved. But a few days later, I had a call from the hospital to tell me one of Blake’s friends had smuggled drugs into the hospital, crudely stuffed inside a teddy bear.

On Monday, June 16, Amy had another seizure. She was taken to The London Clinic. We had security guys working shifts to look after her by this time and the next day I took a call from one of them to warn me that a package was on its way.

I jumped in my cab, and reached the clinic just in time to see a known drug-dealer with a bunch of flowers for Amy. The security man searched the bouquet and found a rock of crack cocaine. Amy went mad when she found out we’d intercepted  the drug.

New love: Amy with Reg Traviss in 2010New love: Amy with Reg Traviss in 2010

Shortly after this Blake was interviewed in a newspaper. He was quoted saying: ‘I dragged Amy into drugs and without me there is no doubt that she would never have gone down that road. I ruined something beautiful.’

Divorce proceedings between Amy and Blake started in January 2009, and on October 5, I could tell Amy that the divorce was now final. She told me two-thirds of her was happy about it, the other third wasn’t.

I never managed to get her to explain exactly what she meant.  We had been planning to offer Blake  £250,000 in full and final settlement. But in the event he received nothing. He had been renting a flat in Sheffield with the money he had made selling stories to the press.

It was the following year when she told me she’d met a guy who was gorgeous and she really liked him. Reg Traviss’s parents ran a pub near Bryanston Square in Central London and Reg had been at the bar when Amy walked in. Amy, bold as brass, went up to him and said: ‘I like your shoes.’

They were retro tan loafers, but I think he could have been wearing football boots and she’d have gone over to start a conversation. Reg couldn’t be more different from Blake. He’s a film director but, with his immaculate greased-back hair and stylish retro clothes, he looks like a Fifties American movie star.

Of course I was desperate for her to move on from Blake. Blake hadn’t stopped calling her all the time, but she had told him that they should see other people as their relationship was over. Not only was Amy going on a first date with a new guy, she was seeing Blake off.

Reg was everything Blake wasn’t, and his warm, quiet and polite manner was appealing.

He also seemed to have a fair grasp on how to deal with things relating to Blake. Reg understood that Amy would need to talk about him and was happy for her to do so. Things weren’t going well for Blake so he was bugging Amy; he was living in Sheffield, but whenever he needed help, he called her.

By 2011, Amy was completely clean. Yet the alcohol remained a serious problem.

June brought that infamous concert in Belgrade. It was a shambles. She must have smuggled some alcohol into the gig, or got someone to do it for her, and she was drunk before she went onstage.

Her performance was disastrous and much of the audience were booing. She couldn’t remember the lyrics of her songs, or even the names of her band members. It was one of the worst ever – right up there with Birmingham.

On June 22, Amy came home. She asked: ‘Dad, do you think I’m beautiful?’

Untimely death: High levels of alcohol were found in Amy's systemUntimely death: High levels of alcohol were found in Amy’s system

‘I think you’re the most beautiful girl in the world,’ I replied. ‘But you’re asking the wrong person. I’m your father.’

‘Just give me a cuddle, Dad,’ she said, and we sat together for an hour, me holding her in my arms.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, my darling daughter Amy passed away. We cried and cried until it seemed there were no tears left. I had seen Amy the day before I flew to New York and she was fine.

Janis and Reg had seen her the next day and she was fine. And she was still fine later that night – although, according to Andrew, her security man, she was ‘tipsy’.

When Andrew checked on her a bit later, she was singing and playing drums in her room. He had checked on her again in the morning and thought she was asleep. Then he checked again a few hours later and raised the alarm.

A lot of people believe Amy’s life was in turmoil during her last 18 months. But nothing could be  further from the truth. Yes, she  had lapses back into alcoholism,  but those lapses had been getting further apart. There was no doubt that her life was going in the right direction.

I always equated Amy’s neatness, or lack of it, to how well-ordered her mind was at any particular time. During those last 18 months the clothes in her wardrobes were neat and tidy, her books and CDs were organised alphabetically and her sketch books numbered.

I knew that Amy couldn’t have died from a drug overdose, as she had been drug-free since 2008. But although she had been so brave and had fought so hard in her recovery from alcoholism, I knew she must have lapsed once again.

The following morning we went to St Pancras Mortuary to officially identify her. She looked very, very peaceful, as if she was just asleep, which, in a way, made it a lot harder. She looked lovely. Amy’s passing was and is unbearable. Our lives have changed for ever and will never be the same again.

There had to be an inquest into Amy’s death. Toxicology reports later confirmed that Amy’s system had not contained any illegal drugs at the time of her death. The alcohol levels found in Amy’s blood, however, were very, very, high: 416mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The pathologist who conducted her post-mortem said 350mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood was considered a fatal level. The coroner’s verdict was misadventure.

Hearing Amy’s music – even if we just walk past an open window and hear it playing inside somewhere – is still difficult for me. I miss her so much that sometimes it physically hurts. It’s easy to forget that Amy was only a young woman when she died, as so many people had been touched by her life and her music.

Her legacy is already having a positive effect on many young people’s lives; I have spent much of the time since her death setting up Amy’s Foundation and will spend the rest of my life working for it. Together with my family, my dear friends and the many other people helping us, we will ensure that Amy is never forgotten.

A Saudi man has been beheaded on charges of sorcery and witchcraft, the state news agency SPA says.

The man, Muree bin Ali bin Issa al-Asiri, was found in possession of books and talismans, SPA said. He had also admitted adultery with two women, it said.

The execution took place in the southern Najran province, SPA reported.

Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned executions for witchcraft in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, there were reports of at least two people being executed for sorcery.

Mr Asiri was beheaded after his sentence was upheld by the country’s highest courts, the Saudi news agency website said.

No details were given of what he was found guilty of beyond the charges of witchcraft and sorcery.

Amnesty International says the country does not formally classify sorcery as a capital offence.

But the BBC’s Arab Affairs Editor, Sebastian Usher, says there is a very strong prohibition of some practices from the country’s powerful conservative religious leaders.

Some, he explains, have repeatedly called for the strongest possible punishments against anyone suspected of sorcery – whether they are fortune tellers or faith healers.

In 2010, a Lebanese television presenter of a popular fortune-telling programme was arrested while on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Though sentenced to death, after pressure from his government and human rights groups, he was freed by the Saudi Supreme Court, which found that he had not harmed anyone.

More recent cases of death on charges of sorcery include that of a Saudi woman, executed for committing sorcery and witchcraft in December, in the northern province of Jawf, and that of a Sudanese man executed in September, despite calls led by Amnesty International for his release.

The Yemeni army commander leading the fight against militants in the south of the country has been killed in a suicide attack, officials say.

General Salem Ali Qatan was killed near his home in the port city of Aden, a medical official told AFP news agency.

Yemen is battling militants linked to al-Qaeda who have taken control of parts of the south of the country.

It has recently recaptured several strongholds in the restive southern province of Abyan.

Gen Qatan, Yemen’s southern army commander, was killed while on his way to work by a man wearing an explosives belt, witnesses said.

One report said the attacker handed Gen Qatan a paper, shook his hand and then detonated his explosives.

At least four other people were wounded in the attack, AFP reported.

An al-Qaeda-linked insurgency and separatist unrest have blighted the south of Yemen for years.

Last year, empowered by uprisings against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Islamists consolidated their control over Abyan.

However, the Yemeni army recently launched an offensive that recaptured the towns of Shuqra, Zinjibar and Jaar.

09:33 EST                    17 June 2012

28 years after deserting the U.S. Air Force, a serviceman believed dead has stunned his family by contacting them from where has been living, as a fugitive, in Sweden.

Now aged 47, David Hemler vanished in 1984 while serving at a base in Germany, fleeing the country without a trace.

The conservative-raised airman hitchhiked through Denmark to Sweden after getting involved with a pacifist church – and a girl.

He felt in awe of the ‘fantasy world’ of Germany, its people ‘very involved in peace movements’ and became disillusioned with the policies of former President Ronald Reagan.

Hemler planned on staying in Sweden for a week or so, but ended up marrying a woman from Thailand and settling down under an assumed name.

Together they have borne three children and he works for a Swedish government agency, local newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported. He is registered in Sweden as a citizen of an unknown country who was born in Zurich, keeping his true identity a secret from his new family.

Hemler became one of the U.S. Air Force’s eight most wanted fugitives and had expected at any time to be arrested by military police with both Interpol and Europol looking for him.

The site details how the Pennsylvania-born serviceman deserted on February 10, 1984 from the 6913th Electronic Security Squadron in Augsburg, Germany.

Now Hemler’s true appearance has been revealed after he agreed to a video interview with the DN. He said he turned to the media so as to ‘tell my story without pressure and in my own words’.

Hemler told how he had missed his parents after he deserted but went on to have a child and had not wanted to be separated from her.  He decided to come forward after his third daughter turned two and could go to day care, so his wife would be better able to cope if he was arrested.

The dad-of-three first contacted his U.S. family four weeks ago, speaking to his brother Thomas who was in Massachusetts at the time on a business trip.

‘I heard immediately it was David, even if he had a strange European accent after all these years,’ Thomas Hemler, who lives in New Jersey, was quoted on Sunday as saying.

He said he had asked questions to confirm the man was indeed his brother David. Members of his family in the United States are now planning to visit him in Sweden.

Hemler has since emailed the AFOSI, whose web site he said he has visited ‘a thousand times over the last 20 years’, revealing himself to the authorities.

‘My dream scenario is that the responsible authorities realise I have already been punished quite severely for my actions,’ he said. ‘I have been living 28 years in lies.’

Hemler’s lawyer, Emma Persson, told Reuters he had approached her firm for legal advice about a month ago. ‘My opinion is that he will not lose his permanent residence permit in Sweden, it is very unlikely,’ she said. She also thought it unlikely he would be extradited to the United States.

A U.S. embassy spokesman declined to comment on the case.

China’s first female astronaut, Liu Yang, is expected to improve the Shenzhou-9 mission crew’s working efficiency, a spokeswoman of China’s manned space program said Friday.

“Generally speaking, female astronauts have better durability, psychological stability and ability to deal with loneliness,” Wu Ping said at a press conference at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

She added that a manned space program without the participation of women would be incomplete.

More than 50 female astronauts from seven countries have to date served in space missions. The longest space flight by a female astronaut lasted 188 days.

“The fact fully proves that female astronauts are completely competent for fulfilling space flight missions,” Wu said while briefing the press just ahead of the imminent Shenzhou-9 manned space mission to be launched on Saturday.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft will send Liu Yang, 33, and two male astronauts, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang, into an orbit where they will manually dock Shenzhou-9 with awaiting Tiangong-1 space experimental module.

All countries that have completed manned space missions attached great significance to their respective first female astronaut’s maiden space flight, Wu said, citing the former Soviet Union’s first female astronaut Valentina Tereshkova and Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

“The Chinese female astronaut’s participation in the manned space mission will accelerate research and development of female astronaut-related products, training and selection,” said Wu.

“It could also showcase Chinese women’s good image and further promote social influence of the country’s manned space program,” the spokeswoman said.

“As a female, I’m looking forward to the performance of China’s first female astronaut’s space flight,” she said.

“Survivor” couple Boston Rob and Amber Mariano have added one more tiny tot to their growing tribe.

The pair, who met on the set of “Survivor: All Stars,” welcomed daughter number three, 7 lb., 3 oz. baby Isabetta Rose, on Saturday, May 5, they revealed to People magazine.

“Isabetta was born with a full head of brown hair and blue eyes,” Amber said, adding that “she still has all of her hair almost six weeks later, and her eyes are still as blue as can be.”

Rob and Amber are already parents to two young girls – Lucia Rose, 2 1/2, and Carina Rose, 18 months.

“Her sisters can’t get enough of her,” Amber gushed. “They always want to hold her and I’m not sure who gives her more kisses – her big sisters or her parents!”

Keeping the girls’ middle name uniform – Rose – is a tradition that Amber says Rob insisted upon.

“Rob really liked the idea of all of our girls sharing the same middle name,” Amber said. “Many cousins on his side also share Rose as their middle name.”

During the 2008 live finale show for “Survivor,” Rob got down on one knee to ask for Amber’s hand in marriage after their romance unfolded onscreen all season long.

Now, Rob, 36, and Amber, 33, work to maintain a balance between family and their favorite pasttime: reality shows.

“Three girls under 3 has made life a little crazy at times,” Amber admitted, “but that is what Rob and I are all about. We are absolutely loving life with our three little princesses.”

Rob last appeared on History Channel’s “Around the World in 80 Ways” in 2011.

At least 19 people were killed today when a bomb blast destroyed a bus in Pakistan.

Seven women and a child were among the dead, said local police investigating the explosion near the city of Peshawar in the north-west of the country.

Forty-two others were injured in the attack, which targeted government workers, and rescuers warned that the death toll could rise further.

One survivor described how he was covered in the blood of other victims as the bomb tore the bus apart.

Carnage: Pakistani security officials examine the wreckage of the destroyed bus on the outskirts of PeshawarCarnage: Pakistani security officials examine the wreckage of the destroyed bus on the outskirts of Peshawar

No group has claimed responsibility for the atrocity, although the Pakistan Taliban and its network of militants have carried out similar bombings in the past.

The bus was filled with commuting government employees when the bomb was detonated.

Mohammed Javed, 35, who was on board, said he was covered in the blood of other victims.

Speaking as he was treated at a local hospital, Mr Javed added: ‘Luckily I was in the front part of the bus, and the bomb went off in the back.

Treatment: Medics attend to the injured at a local hospital. Rescuers fear the death toll will rise

‘Something hit me in the shoulder, but I kept my senses and started helping badly hurt people.’

Witnesses said they saw body parts scattered around the smouldering wreck of the bus.

Jalal Khan, 14, was standing in the aisle of the crowded bus when the bomb went off, and his right arm was slashed by a piece of metal.

‘We all fell on the floor of the bus, and people were crying for help,’ he said.

‘I was unable to see anything because there was a lot smoke, and I was having trouble breathing.’

Local officials said they believed the bomb had been hidden underneath the rear of the bus.

Torn apart: A Pakistani security official inspects the bus in which at least 19 people were killedTorn apart: A Pakistani security official inspects the bus in which at least 19 people were killed

Television footage showed residents shuttling bloodied victims to hospital in taxis, trucks and other private vehicles.

Officials wheeled one woman into the hospital on a stretcher. She was covered by a blanket, and her clothes were soaked with blood.

The attack came one day after a remote-controlled bomb killed at least 15 people outside a madrassah in the south-western city of Quetta.

Pakistan has been battling a home-grown insurgency since 2007, which has claimed some 5,000 lives.

Iftikhar Hussain, the information minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Peshawar is the capital, said the government would continue to target militants if attacks did not stop.

He said: ‘For the sake of protecting people, we are always ready for negotiation, but if the terrorists are not ready to stop, the only option left for the government is to go for a massive operation against the terrorists wherever they are.’

Gloom continued over the euro zone Monday, as Portugal cut its growth forecast and announced a recapitalization of its biggest banks, while pressure built for greater integration in Europe to help stem the region’s debt crisis.

Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar of Portugal said Monday that gross domestic product was expected to grow next year by 0.2 percent, down from the 0.6 percent growth it estimated in late April. He also forecast that the country’s debt would peak next year at 118.6 percent of gross domestic product, 3 percentage points worse than expected.

Portugal’s economic restructuring “remains on track amidst continued challenges,” the International Monetary Fund said in a statement. “The authorities are implementing the reform policies broadly as planned and external adjustment is proceeding faster than expected.”

Portugal last year sought 78 billion euros, or $97 billion, from the European Union, the European Central bank, and the International Monetary Fund after a loss of confidence in its public finances left it unable to access the bond market. Of the funds, 12 billion euros was earmarked to repair banks’ tattered balance sheets.

Three banks — Millennium, Banco B.P.I. and Caixa Geral de Depositos — will draw a combined 6.7 billion euros to help them meet new capital requirements. The Finance Ministry said they would be “among the best capitalized in Europe” after the transactions were completed.

Mr. Gaspar also told journalists in Lisbon that Portugal would stick to the tough bailout agreement whatever comes: “There are considerable internal and external risks,” Reuters quoted him as saying. “The only certainty we have is that we need to focus on meeting the targets of the program.”

Still, the fund warned that rising unemployment in Portugal “has emerged as a pressing concern.”

The news Monday came after a weekend in which the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, sought to rebuff the growing pressure for action from Germany to halt the run on Spanish banks. One idea that has gained increasing traction of late is for the 17 euro nations to jointly issue some kind of debt that could be used to guarantee the finances of struggling members.

But Ms. Merkel told her party on Saturday that “under no circumstances” would she agree to such bonds, Bloomberg News reported.

Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, called Saturday for centralized budget control and the creation of a banking union in Europe as steps toward calming markets. Euro zone countries should “cede more sovereignty” to a central fiscal authority, Bloomberg News quoted Mr. Rajoy as saying.

Pierre Moscovici, the French finance minister, said Sunday in an interview on RTL radio that aid to Spain’s banks should pass through the European Stability Mechanism — the new bailout fund that is to come on line in July — rather than through aid to the Spanish government, as Ms. Merkel desires.

Mr. Moscovici also said it was the desire of President François Hollande that Europe adopt a banking union.

In Berlin, a German government spokesman said Monday that Spain should decide whether to seek an international bailout. His remarks came after the newsmagazine Der Spiegel, in a weekend report, said Mrs. Merkel and Wolfgang Schäuble, her finance minister, were pushing Spain to ask for a bailout.

“Everyone knows that Europe is ready,” Bloomberg News quoted Steffen Seibert, a spokesman for Mrs. Merkel, as saying. “But the decision lies with the Spanish government alone.”

Marco Valli, chief euro zone economist at Unicredit in Milan, said European officials were not focused well enough on the problems at hand.

“There are two very urgent topics that needed to be addressed if the euro is going to be saved,” he said: one the creation of a pan-European bank deposit program, and the other the necessity of using the European Stability Mechanism for recapitalizing banks directly.

“Questions about a single regulator, supervisor or resolution authority is something for the medium- or longer-term,” he said. “It could take a couple of years.”

June 3, 2012            9:15 p.m.

A corn dog and a few drag queens were never meant to wreak such havoc.

But there they were, captured in photos deemed inappropriate because of their “sexual content.”

It was an August afternoon and Mitch Stein was asked to see the principal of Covina’s Charter Oak High School, where he worked as an assistant water polo coach. Someone had anonymously dropped off printouts of Stein’s Facebook and Myspace pages. The envelope included a photo of Stein wearing eyeliner and surrounded by men decked out in bustiers, wigs and makeup. Another showed him at the L.A. County Fair, pretending to take a large bite of a batter-dipped hot dog.

Harmless photos taken in good fun, Stein insisted. But administrators weren’t amused. Stein was fired.

The 36-year-old has since filed a wrongful termination suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accusing Charter Oak Unified School District of “animus toward gay and lesbian employees” and of holding him to a different standard because he is gay. He seeks an unspecified amount of money in damages and wants the incident expunged from his personnel record. Stein also wants his coaching job back.

In the wake of Stein’s dismissal, parents and students have rallied around the former assistant coach, who still helps raise funds for the team. At the same time, the case has revived old accusations of anti-gay sentiments within the school district’s administration.

Taking the position seemed a no-brainer to Stein when he began in May 2011. Charter Oak was his alma mater, he knew the head coach, and his daughter would be attending as a freshman. He had a lucrative and flexible job as a producer in the TV industry and years of experience coaching water polo.

He led the boys junior varsity team through an undefeated summer season and was preparing to continue his role in the fall when he was summoned by the school’s principal, Kathleen Wiard. In her possession was the corn dog photo and one of Stein among drag queens. Stein said Wiard called the photo “obscene” and asked whether he would approve of a male teacher posing with his daughter in a swimsuit.

“I was like, ‘Now you’re calling me a pedophile?’ ” Stein said. “How does one have anything to do with the other?”

Wiard declined to comment for this article, saying it was a personnel matter.

Stein had posted the photos online several years earlier and never worried that they might cause problems. The corn dog photo had been a joke. The drag queens had an act in a weekly variety show he used to produce at a gay bar in Long Beach. One night they gathered around Stein, who made the devil horns sign with one hand and grinned as the camera flashed.

“I just didn’t feel there was anything to hide,” said Stein, who made his pages private only in the hopes of being reinstated. The photos in question merely represented gay culture, he argued.

Terry Stanfill, an assistant superintendent of Charter Oak Unified, said that the district follows a non-discrimination policy and that teachers and coaches are held to a “higher standard.” He said there were no specific policies about social media and declined to discuss the matter further.

It’s not the first time the district, which serves a dozen schools in Covina and Glendora, has faced accusations that it harbors an anti-gay sentiment. In 2003, a gay male teacher filed a sexual orientation discrimination complaint saying he was harassed by an administrator. Stanfill said a thorough investigation was conducted and there was nothing to substantiate the claim.

That teacher, who has left the district, wrote a letter to Stein recently saying he believed administrators expected him to conceal his sexual orientation. The teacher wrote that he has since worked in other districts and that the social climate was more welcoming than at Charter Oak.

According to Stein, other gay employees at Charter Oak Unified have also reached out. Stein said one had told him that he, Stein, had not been “the right type of gay” because he spoke openly about his fiance, Hugo, and never hid his sexual orientation. Another described the climate as toxic, Stein said.

Stein grew up in Covina and graduated from Charter Oak in 1993. Back then, he kept his relationships quiet. Upon his return to the school last year, he was impressed that there was a gay student association on campus. But he said he learned quickly that the administration was a different matter.

“It was a lot like the military, very ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ ” Stein said. “You don’t feel welcomed.”

Since his termination, Stein has been offered coaching jobs from three other districts. But he wants to stay near his daughter Devynn, a swimmer and ranked water polo player.

He has remained a fixture at the school despite being stripped of his title. Still referred to as “coach” by students, he coordinated a beach clean-up that netted $3,500 in corporate donations, shopped for items for the snack bar, hauled tubs of nacho cheese to the matches and manned the refreshments station. The $900 he made as a summer coach was donated back to the team.

Parents voted him in unanimously as president-elect of the aquatics booster board.

“I’ve seen the photos and I don’t think they’re inappropriate at all,” said Raymond Adams, 43, who has two sons on the water polo team.

“I don’t agree with homosexuality, but at the same time we shouldn’t be judging anybody,” Adams said. “His private life has nothing to do with coaching the water polo team. I believe the school made a huge mistake, and they should just come forward and admit it and stop wasting the school district’s money. I see Mr. Stein as a servant to the community and the kids more than people that I go to church with, including myself.”

Stein said he is pursuing the lawsuit for current and past employees who are afraid that making waves would jeopardize their livelihoods.

“I don’t have to worry about it affecting my profession,” Stein said. “I’ll take this all the way. There’s only one outcome and that is that I get put back on the pool deck.”

Three Brunswick teenagers died and two remain hospitalized after a one-vehicle crash early this morning.

Jeffrey Chaya, 18, was driving his 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier west on Boston Road, east of Boone Road, at 12:11 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle after it crossed a railroad track and went airborne, according to a press release from the Elyria post of the State Highway Patrol.

The vehicle went off the right side of the road, then Chaya overcorrected and went off the left side of the road before it struck a ditch, a tree and overturned back on the road, resting upside down.

Chaya, front seat passenger Blake Bartchak, 17, and backseat passenger Lexi Poerner, 16, died in the crash.

Backseat passenger Kevin Fox, 18, was ejected from the car and flown to Cleveland Metro Health Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson said Fox was in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Backseat passenger Julia Romito, 17, was transported by Valley City Fire and EMS to Southwest General Hospital. The hospital would not release her condition because she is a minor, a spokesperson said.

The Elyria post and Medina post of the Ohio Highway Patrol and fire departments from Columbia Township, Strongsville and Liverpool Township responded to the crash.

The crash is under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol or drug use was involved, but high speed was a factor, according to the press release.

ap spelling bee winner nandipati lt 120531 wblog Snigdha Nandipati Spells Guetapens to Win the National Spelling Bee

May 31, 2012           10:19pm

The winning word meant “ambush, snare or trap,” but Snigdha Nandipati of San Diego didn’t fall for it.

G-U-E-T-A-P-E-N-S, she spelled, correctly, nailing the word with the French derivation.

“It’s a miracle,” she said after her spelling of ”guetapens” clinched victory in the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., this evening.

Nandipati, who’d been to the spelling bee once before,  defeated a total of 278 contestants.

“I knew it. I had seen it before. I just wanted to ask everything I could before I started spelling,” Nandipati said.

Jordan Hoffman from Kansas City was the first finalist eliminated – for misspelling “canities.”

In the 10th round, Arvind Mahankali grabbed third place after incorrectly spelling “schwannoma.”

That left Stuti Mishra of Orlando, Fla., to go head-to-head with Nandipati. Mishra misspelled the word “schwarmerei.”

Out of 11 million kids from across the globe, nine competed in the finals round. Those nine included Frank Cahill, Emma Ciereszynski, Lena Greenberg, Hoffman, Mahankali, Mishra, Nandipati, Nicholas Rushlow, and Gifton Wright from Jamaica.

All participants in the finals round were 14 years old, except for Mahankali, who was 12.

This year’s spelling bee also brought the youngest contestant in history, 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va.

Madison fell four points short of making the semifinals and told the Washington Post that stress and fatigue led to her misspelling onstage.

“I was really disappointed that I misspelled the word. I knew the word,” Madison told The Washington Post. “It was just too bad that I misspelled the word.”

According to ESPN, some contestants spend up to 600 hours studying for the bee.

For Nicholas Rushlow, who was eliminated in the ninth round after competing for the past five years, just seeing supporters made all the work worthwhile.

“I know there are a lot of friends out there watching me,” Rushlow said. “I just want to say thanks y’all.”
