SOUTH Korean President Park Geun-hye has fired her spokesman over an unspecified “unsavoury” act midway through her trip to the United States this week, Yonhap news agency reports.

Senior presidential press secretary Lee Nam-ki announced Yoon Chang-jung’s dismissal, saying he was “personally involved in an unsavoury incident”, described as “an inappropriate act for a high-level official” that “hurt national dignity”.

Lee did not elaborate but said South Korea’s embassy in Washington was looking into the incident and the findings would be made public.

Yoon had returned to Seoul from Washington on Wednesday without accompanying Park on her visit to Los Angeles, the final stop of her visit to the United States, sparking speculation on why he cut his trip short, Yonhap said.

Earlier this week, Park held a summit with President Barack Obama, with the two leaders united in a vow to offer no concessions when dealing with North Korea.

Park also addressed a joint session of the US Congress, stressing that Pyongyang had to give up its nuclear weapons while also proposing small peace steps after months of sky-high tensions.

When Jeff Bauman woke up in a hospital bed on Tuesday, an air tube was down his throat, both of his legs had been amputated at the knee, and his father was by his side. He tried to talk, but he could not.

He looked angry, as he motioned his arms up and out like shock waves and mouthed: “Boom! Boom!”

Jeff Bauman is the man in the photograph that has become an icon of the Boston Marathon attack, the one showing a bloodied, distraught young man, holding his left thigh, being wheeled away by a man in a cowboy hat. If the world could not identify him immediately, Mr. Bauman’s father — also named Jeff Bauman — certainly could.

That was his son with his legs destroyed, wearing a favorite shirt. That was his son.

When the explosions went off at the Boston Marathon, Jeff Bauman, 52, called his son’s cellphone again and again — no answer. He knew his son was there, to cheer for his girlfriend, Erin Hurley, who was running her first Boston Marathon. For an hour, he kept calling, calling. No answer.

Then his stepdaughter, Erika, called him. “Did you see the picture?” she asked. “Jeffrey’s on the news. He got hurt.”

“Are you sure? Are you sure?” He was shouting now.

“Yes! Yes! I’m sure!” she shouted back.

Mr. Bauman found the picture on Facebook. It was not the whole picture, the one that showed Jeff’s left leg blown off at the calf. He started calling Boston-area hospitals and found his son registered at Boston Medical Center. He and his wife, Csilla, drove from their home in Concord, N.H., and reached Jeff’s side just before 8 p.m.

The surgery was already done. Both Jeff’s legs had been amputated at the knee. He had lost an excessive amount of blood. During surgery, the doctors had to keep resuscitating him, giving him blood and fluids, because he had lost so much.

Jeff, 27, is a good kid, never got in trouble, his father said. He likes playing guitar. He works behind the deli counter at Costco. He plans to pay off his student loans and go back to school at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

During the marathon, he was standing at the finish line waiting for Ms. Hurley, alongside her two roommates. Ms. Hurley was still about a mile away when the blasts went off, far enough away that she did not know what had happened. Why had everyone stopped?

Jeff was the first casualty brought to Boston Medical, his family was told. He went through the first operation and then a second, about 1 a.m., to drain internal fluids caused by the blunt trauma.

That night, Jeff’s half-brother, Alan, called from his boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex. His father told him Jeff had been hurt but did not say how badly. He planned to tell Alan the whole truth later.

The Baumans knew how lucky Jeff had been. “The man in the cowboy hat — he saved Jeff’s life,” Ms. Bauman said. Mr. Bauman’s eyes widened. He said: “There’s a video where he goes right to Jeff, picks him right up and puts him on the wheelchair and starts putting the tourniquet on him and pushing him out. I got to talk to this guy!”

The man in the cowboy hat, Carlos Arredondo, 52, had been handing out American flags to runners when the first explosion went off. His son Alexander was a Marine killed in Iraq in 2004, and in the years since he has handed out the flags as a tribute.

With the first blast, Mr. Arredondo jumped over the fence and ran toward the people lying on the ground. What happened next, he later recounted to a reporter: He found a young man, a spectator, whose shirt was on fire. He beat out the flames with his hands. The young man, who turned out to be Jeff Bauman, had lost the lower portion of both legs. He took off a shirt and tied it around the stump of one leg. He stayed with Mr. Bauman, comforting him, until emergency workers came to help carry him to an ambulance.

He helped only one man, Mr. Bauman.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Baumans wondered what had become of the man in the cowboy hat. They wanted to tell him that their son was alive, that he was moving his arms and legs.

But he might be in the hospital for two more weeks. What would he do when he was not so sedated? They plan to bring him his guitar. What would they say to him when he came to?

The elder Mr. Bauman covered his mouth with his hand. “I just don’t know,” he said, and he started to cry.

PHOTO: Former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner is shown in this handout photo; a manhunt spread across southern California on Feb. 7, 2013 for Dorner, who has threatened to kill police and who is being sought in two weekend killings an

February 7, 2013

The fired California cop who set off a region-wide manhunt after allegedly shooting three police officers this morning — one fatally — had initially gone to a yacht club near San Diego where police say he attempted to steal a boat and flee to Mexico.

Police say that former police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, who officials believe posted an online manifesto outlining his plan to “terminate” his former colleagues and their families, is armed with a long gun and might have several other guns and high-capacity magazines. He is also believed to have access to military uniforms because he has served in the Navy.

“We are considering him armed and dangerous,” Lt. Julia Engen of the Irvine Police Department said.

Police allege that he went to the yacht club Wednesday night at Point Loma, Calif., near San Diego to steal the boat. He aborted the attempted theft when the boat’s propeller became entangled in a rope, law enforcement officials said. It was at that point he is believed to have headed to Riverside, where he allegedly shot two police officers.

“He pointed a handgun at the victim [at the yacht club] and demanded the boat,” Lt. David Rohowits of the San Diego Police Department said.

Police say the rifle marksman shot at four officers in two incidents overnight, hitting three of them: one in Corona, Calif., and the two in Riverside, Calif.

Sgt. Rudy Lopez of the LAPD said two LAPD officers were in Corona and headed out on special detail to check on one of the individuals named in Dorner’s manifesto. Dorner allegedly grazed one of them but missed the other.

“[This is an] extremely tense situation,” Lopez said. “We call this a manhunt. We approach it cautiously because of the propensity of what has already happened.”

The Riverside Police Department said two of its officers were shot before one of them died, KABC-TV reported. The other is in stable condition with two gunshot wounds, police say.

“They were on routine patrol stopped at a stop light when they were ambushed,” Lt. Guy Toussant of the Riverside police department said.

In the manifesto Dorner published online, he threatened at least 12 people by name, along with their families.

“Your lack of ethics and conspiring to wrong a just individual are over. Suppressing the truth will leave to deadly consequences for you and your family,” Dorner wrote in his manifesto.

A badge and identification belonging to Dorner have been found in San Diego, according to San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick. Dorner’s LAPD badge and ID were found by someone near the city’s airport, and turned in to police overnight, The Associated Press reported.

Police around Southern California are wearing tactical gear, including helmets and guns across their chests. The light-up signs along California highways show the license plate number of Dorner’s car, and say to call 911 if it is seen. The problem, police say, is that they believe Dorner is switching license plates on his car, a 2005 charcoal-gray Nissan Titan pickup truck.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said today that 40 protective details have been deployed to protect officers and their families.

“We are taking all measures possible to ensure safety of our officers and their families,” he said.

Dorner is also believed to be responsible for the weekend slayings of an assistant women’s college basketball coach and her fiancé in what cops believe are acts of revenge against the LAPD, as suggested in his online manifesto.

Lawrence was found slumped behind the wheel of his white Kia in the parking lot of their upscale apartment complex in Irvine Sunday and Quan was in the passenger seat.

“A particular interest at this point in the investigation is a multi-page manifesto in which the suspect has implicated himself in the slayings,” Maggard said.

Police said Dorner’s manifesto included threats against members of the LAPD. Police say they are taking extra measures to ensure the safety of officers and their families.

The document, allegedly posted on an Internet message board this week, apparently blames Quan’s father, retired LAPD Capt. Randy Quan, for his firing from the department.

One passage from the manifesto reads, “I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty.”

“I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own,” it reads. “I’m terminating yours.”

Dorner was with the department from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.

Randy Quan, who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner at the time of his dismissal, LAPD Capt. William Hayes told The Associated Press Wednesday night.

According to documents from a court of appeals hearing in October 2011, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field-training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans, saying in the course of an arrest she had kicked a suspect who was a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

After an investigation, Dorner was fired for making false statements.

ht clinton romesha mi 130111 wblog Afghanistan War Hero to Receive Medal of Honor

Friday January 11, 2013           13:06:21 EST

A former staff sergeant who helped repel one of the largest, most vicious battles against U.S. forces in Afghanistan will receive the Medal of Honor, the White House announced Friday.

Clinton L. Romesha, 31, will be the fourth living service member to receive the nation’s highest award for valor for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq. Seven other service members have posthumously been awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions in those wars.

Romesha will be awarded Feb. 11 at the White House.

Romesha was a section leader in B Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division during the Oct. 3, 2009, attack on Combat Outpost Keating in eastern Afghanistan.

Eight American soldiers were killed and two dozen others wounded in the battle as the troop-sized element fought against an overwhelming enemy force that launched a brazen attack to overrun the COP.

A RARE HONOR

With the announcement of the Medal of Honor for former Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha, 11 service members — seven of them soldiers — have received the nation’s highest award for valor for actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The first seven were awarded posthumously.

Spc. Ross McGinnisSgt. 1st Class Paul SmithNavy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor and Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham were honored posthumously for their actions in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Robert MillerSgt. 1st Class Jared Monti and Navy Lt. Michael Murphy were honored posthumously for their actions in Afghanistan.

Former Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta is the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor from these wars. Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry and Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer also received the Medal of Honor. All three men were honored for their actions in Afghanistan.

REMEMBER THE FALLEN

Eight soldiers were killed in the Oct. 3, 2009, attack on Combat Outpost Keating in northeastern Afghanistan. They were:

• Staff Sgt. Vernon W. Martin, 25, of Savannah, Ga.

• Staff Sgt. Justin T. Gallegos, 27, of Tucson, Ariz.

• Sgt. Joshua M. Hardt, 24, of Applegate, Calif.

• Sgt. Joshua J. Kirk, 30, of South Portland, Maine

• Sgt. Michael P. Scusa, 22, of Villas, N.J.

• Spc. Christopher T. Griffin, 24, of Kincheloe, Mich.

• Spc. Stephan L. Mace, 21, of Lovettsville, Va.

• Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson, 22, of Reno, Nev.

The attack on COP Keating remains one of the deadliest attacks against coalition forces in Afghanistan and is chronicled in the book “The Outpost” by Jake Tapper.

Several other soldiers at COP Keating that day have been honored for their actions. According to Army Times’ reporting and “The Outpost,” at least nine soldiers — including the platoon leader who ran operations that day and the physician assistant who treated numerous casualties and gave his own blood to keep one of his patients alive — were awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest award for valor.

In “The Outpost,” Tapper outlines Romesha’s unwavering courage and determination as the vastly outnumbered American troops and their Latvian partners battled an enemy force numbering more than 300.

Romesha is described as intense, short and wiry.

“The son of a leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church in Cedarville, California … his parents had hoped he would follow his father into the church leadership, and Romesha had in fact gone to seminary for four years during high school — from five till seven every morning — but ultimately it just wasn’t for him. He didn’t even go on a mission, a regular rite for young Mormon men. Romesha was better suited to this kind of mission, with guns and joes under his command.”

At 5:58 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009, the enemy launched its attack from all four sides of the small COP, which was nestled in the bottom of a valley surrounded by towering mountains.

About 50 American, 20 Afghan and two Latvian soldiers were stationed at COP Keating, along with about a dozen Afghan Security Guards. Nearby, the 19 American and 10 Afghan soldiers at Observation Post Fritsche also came under heavy fire.

Firing a recoilless rifle, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, machine guns and rifles, the enemy quickly wreaked havoc on the two positions.

In two minutes, the first U.S. soldier was killed as the enemy targeted the COP’s mortar pit and pinned down the soldiers at OP Fritsche, preventing them from providing supporting fire to COP Keating.

The Afghan troops and security guards reportedly quickly abandoned their posts, leaving the Americans and Latvians to fight alone.

During the first three hours of the battle, mortars hit the COP and OP every 15 seconds, and in less than an hour, the enemy swarmed the COP, breaching the Afghan army side of the compound. The enemy eventually set fire to the small outpost, destroying almost 70 percent of it.

Romesha and his fellow soldiers immediately fought back — and continued to fight for hours — as heavy enemy fire rained down on them from all directions.

According to the citation accompanying Romesha’s Medal of Honor, the staff sergeant moved under intense enemy fire to reconnoiter the battlefield and seek reinforcements from the barracks before returning to action with the support of an assistant gunner, who is identified in “The Outpost” as Cpl. Justin Gregory.

Romesha “took out an enemy machine gun team and, while engaging a second, the generator he was using for cover was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, inflicting him with shrapnel wounds,” according to the citation.

Undeterred by his injuries, Romesha continued to fight, and upon the arrival of another soldier to aid him and with the assistant gunner, Romesha again “rushed through the exposed avenue to assemble additional soldiers.”

Romesha then mobilized and led a five-man team and returned to the fight.

“With complete disregard for his own safety, Romesha continually exposed himself to heavy enemy fire as he moved confidently about the battlefield, engaging and destroying multiple enemy targets, including three Taliban fighters who had breached the combat outpost’s perimeter,” according to the citation.

As the enemy attacked the COP with even “greater ferocity, unleashing a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades and recoilless rifle rounds,” Romesha “identified the point of attack and directed air support to destroy over 30 enemy fighters.”

When he learned that other soldiers at a distant battle position were still alive, Romesha and his team provided covering fire, allowing three of their wounded comrades to reach the aid station, according to the citation.

Romesha and his team also moved 100 meters under “withering fire” to recover the bodies of their fallen comrades.

Romesha’s calm — and sense of humor — under fire is described in “The Outpost.”

During the battle, Romesha tries to rally Spc. Zach Koppes, who was pinned down in a Humvee.

As recounted in “The Outpost”:

Romesha ran up to the vehicle under enemy fire.

“This doesn’t look good,” Romesha said. “We’re all going to die.”

He laughed — he had a pretty dark sense of humor, Romesha. “You okay?”

Koppes looked at him. Bullets were ricocheting off the truck right next to him, but the staff sergeant just stood there looking back at Koppes, smiling the whole time.

Holy shit, he’s lost his mind, the specialist thought.

“Yeah, I’m good,” Koppes finally replied. “I still got this sniper behind me.”

“Okay, stay low and hang tight,” Romesha told him.

At that moment, the sniper shot at Romesha, who then ducked behind the Humvee and began playing peekaboo with the enemy, trying to draw him out so he could see exactly where he was firing from. He decided that the Taliban fighter was midway up on the Northface, so he fired the Dragunov [rifle] at the spot.

Then he turned and airily announced to Koppes, “All right, I’m going to head out.”

Romesha’s actions “throughout the day-long battle were critical in suppressing an enemy that had far greater numbers,” according to the citation accompanying his award. “His extraordinary efforts gave Bravo Troop the opportunity to regroup, reorganize and prepare for the counter-attack that allowed the troop to account for its personnel and secure Combat Outpost Keating.”

After the battle, COP Keating, which had been slated for months to close but had remained open because of continual delays, was shut down and destroyed.

Romesha, of Lake City, Calif., is married and has three children. He enlisted in the Army in September 1999 as an M1 armor crewman, and deployed to Kosovo and twice to Iraq before serving in Afghanistan.

Romesha left the Army in April 2011 and currently lives with his family in Minot, N.D., where he works as a field safety specialist for an oil field construction firm.

In addition to the Medal of Honor, Romesha’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge.

Wisconsin voter fraud billboard

October 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM

When Scot Ross heard about more than a dozen billboards going up in largely minority neighborhoods around Cleveland, Ohio, bearing ominous images of a judge’s gavel and copy warning of the legal penalties (fines and jail time) for voter fraud, the story had a familiar ring. Back in 2010, nearly identical billboards sprang up around Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Like the Ohio boards, the Wisconsin campaign seemed to target minority-rich neighborhoods, low income areas, and a few rural areas. And just like in Ohio, whoever purchased the ads from Clear Channel Outdoor Advertising did so anonymously — the boards carried only the information that they were paid for by “a private family foundation.”

The Milwaukee billboards in 2010 replaced the gavel with images of a black man and woman, and a larger picture of a white woman, behind bars, with the words “We Voted Illegally” emerging from a cartoon bubble, underneath the large headline: “VOTER FRAUD is a FELONY!” Voting rights advocates protested the boards, to no avail.

And then, with just a few weeks to go before the 2012 election, the boards were back. More than more than 85 of them across the Milwaukee area, according to Clear Channel Outdoor Advertising.

Activists in Ohio and Wisconsin, including Ross’ organization, One Wisconsin Now, tried to get Clear Channel to name the purchaser, but were rebuffed.

After weeks of protests, Clear Channel backed down, removing the boards in both states, saying they violated the company’s prohibition on anonymous political advertising. But Ross and other activists still wanted to know — who had targeted minority voters with a message that, to many, smacked of attempted intimidation and voter disenfranchisement?

A joint investigation by One Wisconsin Now and theGrio revealed the name of the family foundation that purchased the “voter fraud” Wisconsin billboards in 2010 and 2012. And while it’s not known whether the same foundation also bought the boards in Ohio, it’s clear that the web of “dark money” funding not just anti “voter fraud” campaigns, but also more aggressive tactics aimed at overwhelmingly Democratic voters in key swing states, has deep roots in Wisconsin.

One Wisconsin Now and theGrio discovered that a little-known non-profit, the Einhorn Family Foundation, based in Milwaukee, was behind the 2010 and 2012 Milwaukee area billboard campaigns. The Einhorn Foundation, led by the family patriarch, Steven Einhorn, is just one of a constellation of conservative organizations that go beyond Charles and David Koch, the billionaire brothers behind much of the tea party funding, who have become familiar to those watching the rise of “dark money” in American elections since the Citizens United decision in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Kochs, with their Americans for Prosperity, fellowships designed to influence colleges and universities to teach the Kochs’ version of “free market” principals, their aggressive patronage of the Libertarian Cato Institute, and the more than $100 million the two have pledged to spend to defeat President Barack Obama for a second term, are by far the most public members of a conservative elite who aim to exert influence over public policy at the state and federal level. But they are neither the only, nor even the largest players.

An even larger entity, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Family Foundation, has spent close to $500 million since 2001, on everything from conservative think tanks to voting-related groups and even a right wing media watchdog, which has spread the myth of rampant voter fraud to conservative blogs and news outlets.

“A lot of people think that the most destructive elements coming out of Wisconsin might be [Governor] Scott Walker’s agenda, and [Republican vice presidential candidate] Paul Ryan,” One Wisconsin Now’s Scot Ross told MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry on Saturday. “But it turns out it’s this little building down in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that houses the Bradley Foundation.”

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailed the Bradley Foundation’s funding of right wing causes last year, ranging from think tanks like the American Enterprise, Hoover and Manhattan institutes, to what activists have deemed efforts to suppress minority votes, in order to help elect conservative Republicans.

Organizations receiving financing from Bradley include American Majority, a tea party affiliated group started in 2008 to train candidates for state and federal office, and which has received nearly $700,000 from Bradley since 2010, the Wisconsin Institute for Liberty, a conservative legal organization funded with a $500,000 from Bradley, and True the Vote, which has claimed it plans to recruit 1 million “poll watchers” to challenge voters’ eligibility and be on guard for alleged “voter fraud” at polling places nationwide. (True the Vote ultimately had to return the $35,000 it received from the Bradley Foundation because the organization had not received 501C3 status.)  American Majority, in turn, was an early funder of a Wisconsin-based nonprofit called “Media Trackers,” started by a former Republican National Committee staffer in 2011, which performs opposition research for the right, attacking so-called “liberal media” outlets and even blogs, and floating stories about alleged voter fraud to right wing media.

In 2010, the Einhorn Family Foundation received $10,000 from the foundation “to support a public education project” under the Bradley Foundation’s “civic growth and prosperity” giving category.

The foundation is led by Steve Einhorn, who along with his wife, gave Gov. Scott Walker $25,000 during the recall campaign.

One Wisconsin Now came across the foundation’s name by comparing a list of the top Milwaukee private foundations with a list of major donors to Walker’s recall campaign. Ironically, the identity of the private purchaser became clearer after a Milwaukee conservative radio host, Charlie Sykes, mentioned that he had been in contact with the billboard advertiser, because of Sykes’ own strong ties to the Bradley Foundation and his past work for the organization.

Independent sources with direct knowledge of the campaign then confirmed to theGrio that the Einhorn Foundation was indeed the buyer.

So far, the Einhorn Family Foundation has declined to comment publicly on the billboards or on their political activities related to the 2012 election. A public relations representative for the foundation denied that the organization had any part in the billboard campaign.

And like the billboards in Ohio, the ones in Milwaukee were taken down after Clear Channel determined that the anonymity of the funder violated its policy of disclosing the identity of political advertisers. A Clear Channel representative who spoke to theGrio on background did not explain why the billboards were allowed to go up at all, if they violated the anonymity policy.

A web of dark money

Wisconsin has become a veritable laboratory for tea party ascendancy in government and public policy.

The state’s Governor, Scott Walker, who has been heavily supported by both the Koch brothers and the tea party (the Bradley Foundation’s president and CEO, Michael Grebe, was Walker’s campaign co-chair) delighted the right by successfully stripping public sector unions of collective bargaining rights after he was elected in 2010. Ryan became a darling of the right when his austere budget proposal, which slashed funding for anti-poverty programs and turned future Medicare into a voucher program, got the votes of all but a handful of House Republicans, and he was selected as GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate. And former Wisconsin Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus took the helm of the Republican National Committee in 2011 after defeating the previous chairman, Michael Steele, and three other candidates.

Ross believes there is no coincidence that Wisconsin-style tea party politics is spreading nationwide under Priebus’ tenure as national party chair

“When voter suppression allegations have surfaced in Wisconsin for the past decade, the name Reince Priebus has always been close behind,” Ross told theGrio. In 2010, Priebus was cited by name, in an aborted voter caging plot targeting minorities and college students involving the Republican Party of Wisconsin, Americans for Prosperity and Wisconsin’s Tea Party leaders, including documents that referenced ‘billboards’ as part of the scheme multiple times.”

“In 2002, the Wisconsin state Elections Board enacted new guidelines for poll-watchers in response to a Priebus-led racially-charged voter intimidation scheme in Milwaukee,” Ross continued. “In 2008, Priebus’ Republican Party of Wisconsin sent out an email recruiting volunteers for alleged ‘inner city’ voter intimidation in Milwaukee. In 2012, it was uncovered Priebus’ RNC is behind an anonymous lawsuit intervening in a case involving our unconstitutional voter identification law. That this anti-American garbage is turning up in other states now that Priebus is running the RNC is of no surprise to us in Wisconsin given his career of scheming to deny legal voters their right to the franchise. Americans have always rejected politicians, like Reince Priebus, manipulating the voting system for partisan advantage and they will do it in this case as well.”

Reached by theGrio, a spokeswoman, Kirstin Kukowski, declined to provide comment, and pushed back strongly against the premise of this story.

Edward Arthur Dames joined the United States Army in 1967, enlisting as a paratrooper at the age of seventeen. After serving one year as an Airborne Infantryman, Mr. Dames transferred to the Army Security Agency, and was assigned to the Far East to support National Security Agency missions in that part of the world. In 1974, Mr. Dames returned home to attend college, quickly earning a four-year scholarship for academic excellence. After three years as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, where he double-majored in Bioelectronics and Chinese, Mr. Dames joined Berkeley’s ROTC program, becoming a Distinguished Military Graduate, in 1978.

Newly commissioned as a second lieutenant in Military Intelligence, Mr. Dames was sent to be trained as a tactical electronic warfare officer and, for three years, was assigned to Germany to intercept and jam Soviet and Czech communications. From there he was recruited by a scientific and technical military intelligence “black unit”, ultimately to direct clandestine operations against high-value foreign targets. He remained in deep cover, travelling worldwide under assumed identities

In 1981, Mr. Dames’ life changed forever. The Soviets had been secretly developing a sophisticated biological weapons program. Mr. Dames and his elite military group were tasked to identify the components of these deadly, toxic weapons. Covert operatives that he had recruited were unable to penetrate the Soviets’ wall of secrecy. Out of desperation, he contemplated the use of psychics to help uncover this critical information. In reality, the U.S. Army was already considering the possibility of employing psychics for intelligence collection, but very few high- ranking officers were willing to risk their careers over the stigma associated with such a project.

Nevertheless, the U.S. Army began a funded study at the Stanford Research Institute to systematise psychic phenomena and develop a working tool by which “non-psychics” would also be able to utilise psychic functioning for the purpose of acquiring reliable and consistent information. Mr. Dames became the operations and training officer of this team, which ultimately achieved its goal by developing the technique now known as Remote Viewing.

Back in Washington D.C., in 1984, Mr. Dames and his team applied their remote viewing abilities to the toughest national intelligence problems, such as locating and tracking international terrorists and their hostages and, finally, uncovering key data surrounding the Soviet offensive biological warfare program. The results of these efforts were briefed to Congress and the U.S. President. For his work, Mr. Dames was awarded two Army Meritorious Service Medals and the Legion of Merit. Additionally, he was personally credited by the Defense Intelligence Agency with penetrating the Soviet Defense Counciltin that agency’s words, “a singularly profound act.” Over the years, the remote viewing information that he collected continued to be secretly used by numerous government agencies, and by all branches of the military

As a result of increasing turmoil and turnover in the ranks of top Army intelligence leadership during the late 1980′s, “channelers” and psychic charlatans were recruited to co-mingle with the trained professionals in the unit. Worse yet, various politicians, desiring information about their political and personal futures, began to approach the project, turning it into a “three-ring circus.” Rather than being forced to stand by and witness the disintegration of his unit’s effectiveness and the loss of remote viewing technology, Major Dames retired from the U.S. Army, taking the original team’s best and brightest with him to form his Beverly Hills, California based company, PSI TECH.

In late 1991, during the Gulf War, PSI TECH provided intelligence on Saddam Hussein to the National Security Council, and located Iraq’s hidden biological warfare stockpiles for the United Nations. These endeavours earned Mr. Dames and PSI TECH the attention of the world press. Currently, PSI TECH’s clients range from the leaders of Fortune 500 corporations, to academics in science, medicine and law, as well as select individuals from the private sector who undergo the firm’s specialized training. Since 1983, when Mr. Dames began teaching and employing these incredible skills, he has perfected remote viewing methods and techniques, employing his Technical Remote Viewing training and operations protocols, which guarantee his commercial clients an unprecedented 100% data accuracy rate.

Ed’s personal interests include human potential, natural history, martial arts and physical fitness. He is fluent in Chinese Mandarin.

The world’s foremost remote viewing teacher, and creator of Technical Remote Viewing, Major Edward A. Dames, United States Army (ret.), is a decorated military intelligence officer and an original member of the U.S. Army prototype remote viewing training program. He served as both training and operations officer for the U.S. government’s TOP SECRET psychic espionage unit.

Background:

Edward Dames is a ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. Between 1979 and 1983, Major Dames served as an electronic warfare officer and scientific and technical intelligence officer. In 1982, Ingo Swann, under the direction of Dr. Harold Puthoff, head of the Remote Viewing Laboratory at Stanford Research Institute, realized a breakthrough. Swann developed a working model for how the unconscious mind communicates information to conscious awareness. To test the model, the Army sent Major Dames and five others to Swann as a prototype trainee group. The results exceeded all expectations – even those of Swann. In six months, Major Dames’ teammates were producing psychically-derived data with more consistency and accuracy than had ever been seen in similar intelligence projects using even the best ‘natural’ psychics. In late 1983, the team parted company with Swann. As the new operations and training officer for the unit, Dames took this breakthrough skill, dubbed ‘Coordinate Remote Viewing,’ and began a new phase of research, testing, and evaluation in order to both uncover its true capabilities, and to perfect its application to fit crucial intelligence collection needs.

Major Dames receives his first Meritorious Service Medal

Citation Details: For distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious achievement as targeting and analysis officer, United States Army Systems Exploitation Detachment, from 5 January 1983 to 30 September 1984. CPT Dames identified and confirmed the existence of an entirely new Soviet offensive weapon, and then personally briefed senior officials of the National Intelligence Agencies regarding the significance of this new Soviet capability. As a result of CPT Dames’ efforts in uncovering this program, new resources are being programmed to develop the appropriate defense measures to deal with this new and highly disturbing Soviet capability. CPT Dames’ achievements are clearly outstanding and reflect utmost credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Army.Major Dames supplied the U.S. President and NSC with proof that the Soviets had clandestinely developed a new generation of biochemical warfare agents. As a result, Congress approved funds for a new DIA Biological Threat Analysis Center. Under the standard military rigor and discipline, combined with a team approach and countless hours of applying the new tool against a wide range of operational and training targets, ‘psychic intelligence’ (PSIINT) methods and techniques became dependable enough to be considered by some individuals in leadership positions for use in support of life-or-death missions, or special operations in which the application of deadly (military) force was authorized.

Major Dames receives his second Meritorious Service Medal

Citation Details: For distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious achievement as targeting and analysis officer, United States Army Systems Exploitation Detachment, from 1 June 1983 to 1 November 1984. CPT Dames identified a new and unique Soviet weapons program. The national security implications of CPT Dames’ findings have been characterized by top U.S. policymakers as revolutionary, and were briefed by him to officials in all the national intelligence agencies, the Secretary of the Army, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and members of the National Security Council and Congress, who subsequently briefed the president of the United States. CPT Dames’ achievements are clearly outstanding and reflect utmost credit upon himself, his organization and the United States Army. The Army passed control of the ‘psi spy’ unit to the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1986. DIA is an analytical agency, and has no charter to collect intelligence – it did not know what to do with the unit. The unit was ferreted away within DIA’s Scientific and Technical Intelligence Directorate.Dale Graff, a civilian, was assigned by DIA to administratively oversee the unit. Since the unit was no longer being utilized to any real operational potential, Major Dames’ focus shifted almost entirely to developing advanced remote viewing techniques. Quietly, however, he also utilized the team to support projects on behalf of clients in the classified research community. By 1989, civilian Dale Graff, through a complete lack of understanding about remote viewing capabilities and ‘real world’ applications, began recruiting natural psychics as additional members of the team – an act that effectively administered the coup de grace to the unit’s value – and future – as an intelligence collection asset. In the same year, Major Dames brought remote viewing technology out of the military and to the public. He formed a company that started out by hiring virtually all of the original military remote viewers, who were still on active duty. Today, all of the now evolved, enabling remote viewing expertise and knowledge resides in the civilian sector, where Dames continues to teach the techniques and employ this powerful tool in commercial operations.

Major Dames receives The Legion of Merit

Citation Details: For distinguishing himself by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services as an intelligence officer in the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command and the Defense Intelligence Agency from 1 October 1982 to 1 October 1991. His insightful threat analysis has contributed significantly to this country’s ability to maintain its military superiority. Major Dames’ distinguished performance of duty throughout this period represents outstanding accomplishments in the most cherished traditions of the United States Army and reflects the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.Major Dames retired from the U.S. Army in 1991 and began a full-time effort to advance remote viewing technology, and to create teams of professional civilian Remote Viewers to work on complex projects. In 1992, Ingo Swann wrote a letter to The American Society of Psychical Research, which included, among other things, a brief summary of his knowledge about Ed:

“He [Major Dames] was Targeting Director (sic) of the U.S. Intelligence Electronic & Security Command (sic), and assistant director of special operations (sic) in the DIA Directorate of Scientific and Technical Intelligence, and an area controller of special operations (sic) of Headquarters Department of the Army. For several years, he was mandated to brief on a daily and/or weekly basis DIA, NSA, other agencies, and, when circumstances required, the President and his advisors.”

Major Dames released his initial VHS RV training tape set in 1997. Unfortunately, a VHS tape does not allow for a menu system and, therefore, cannot provide an efficiently structured method of presenting RV training targets along with the necessary feedback. By today’s standards, attempting to learn remote viewing from VHS tapes is neither practical nor effective. Attempting to adapt RV training to a CD format does not overcome this problem. From 2000 through 2004, Major Dames held remote viewing workshops around the country in an effort to build a base of vocationally oriented remote viewers. Finally, in September, 2004, Major Dames released the long awaited, groundbreaking Learn Remote Viewing 4-disk DVD course (www.LearnRV.com). The Learn Remote Viewing course is now the most advanced RV training program in the world, incorporating 17 years of evolved, post-’psi spy’ operational knowledge. The training set utilizes the natural DVD menu system to provide a structured, comfortably paced training environment, with an effective mix of training targets, lectures, and feedback. Additionally, a free online forum is manned daily by the teacher himself and his staff of professional remote viewers, providing unlimited assistance to students during and after their training. No other remote viewing training course provides this degree of support and educational excellence.Today, Major Dames remains the leader in this brave new world – a world without secrets. He continues to advance Remote Viewing technology, and to teach the latest remote viewing techniques via the LearnRV DVD course and the RV Community Forum. And, as always, he devotes much of his free time to humanitarian projects.

Remote viewing teacher Major Ed Dames discussed his previous prediction of a major quake in Japan, and shared insights into forthcoming quakes, the solar ‘Kill Shot,’ and safe places to live. In a 2003 show with Art Bell, he predicted a massive earthquake would hit Japan and damage a nuclear reactor. (He was off on the year, which he told Art would be in late Spring, 2005.) He also shared this prediction with Japanese TV (related video clip).

Dames and his team have remote viewed what he calls the “next, mass human death-causing earthquake,”– something akin to what we just witnessed in Japan. Though he couldn’t name a date, the site of this will be the New Madrid Fault and the Wabash Valley seismic zone (see map below), and St. Louis, Missouri will be particularly hard hit with the most deaths, he declared, adding that we might even see the Mississippi River change its course.

The solar ‘Kill Shot,’ which will cause the collapse of Earth’s magnetic field and lead to huge power outages, will begin within the next couple of months, with dangerous activity from the sun continuing through late 2012, he outlined. According to Dames, the safest places in North America to deal with the disastrous upcoming earth changes include Alberta, Saskatchewan, parts of Manitoba, parts of east Oregon, Arizona, parts of New Mexico, the southern portion of the Appalachian Mountains, and an area west of the Great Lakes.

July 6, 2012

When Jorge Garcia Vasquez, 58, joined a 24 Hour Fitness gym in San Diego, an attractive 19-year-old woman took quite a liking to him, so much that she convinced him to become her personal trainer.

But he likely didn’t expect the interest from the much younger woman to turn into a struggle for his life, allegedly part of a set up in a high-dollar kidnapping scheme by the young “femme fatale” and her gang-affiliated accomplices.

That’s what happened to Vasquez and to two other men in 2007, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office says, and the young woman, Nancy Michelle Mendoza Moreno, is standing trial for her alleged role in the elaborate “honey trap,” facing up to life in prison, according a report by the Los Angeles Times. Mendoza’s attorney doesn’t dispute the tale the prosecutors tell but says they picked up the wrong girl and Mendoza, now 24, is the victim of a case of mistaken identity.

Originally from Tijuana, Mendoza’s alleged short but lucrative criminal career began in late 2006 when she became involved with a gang in the San Diego suburbs. Called “Los Palillos,” or the Toothpicks, the gang had split from the then-powerful Arellano Felix drug cartel after infighting. Los Palillos uprooted from Tijuana and set up operations across the border in California, local media reports said.

Once in San Diego County, Los Palillos reigned over a series of violent kidnappings and murders between 2004 and 2007, trafficking drugs and systematically killing rivals, according to the FBI. “Bodies turned up in cars, on jogging paths, and inside houses in quiet, residential neighborhoods,” the FBI said.

Their alleged method of operation: kidnap wealthy, cartel-associated men and hold them for hefty ransoms — knowing that their many of their victims’ shifty legal histories would ensure that the police were never called. Their secret weapon, according to San Diego prosecutors: the young, attractive Mendoza, who would allegedly woo the men into ready-made traps with her coy flirtations.

“She was used as a lure successfully, repeatedly,” said Deputy District Attorney James Fontaine in his opening statement last month. Images of Mendoza clad in revealing lingerie have been entered into trial evidence. Not all the operations were the same, but Mendoza was allegedly influential in bringing some victims who were not easily accessible to the gang members.

In one case, Mendoza allegedly tipped off the Los Palillos kidnappers about the whereabouts of the 25-year-old son of notorious drug trafficker Jose Manuel Nunez as the two were partying together, the L.A. Times reported. In another set-up, she joined the 24 Hour Fitness Gym to get acquainted with Jorge Garcia Vasquez, 58, the relative of a well-known cartel financier. She befriended Garcia, convinced him to be her personal trainer, and “then began to reel in her prey,” prosecutors said in court documents. When Mendoza and Garcia ran an errand together, the kidnappers snagged him at a traffic stop. The two captives alone reportedly brought in almost $1 million in ransom money for Los Palillos.

In the third incident — the one that finally landed Los Palillos in the authorities’ crosshairs — prosecutors say Mendoza chatted up wealthy businessman Eduardo Gonzalez Tostado at a local Starbucks and later invited him to visit her at her aunt’s home. Upon entering the house with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of cognac, he was accosted by the Los Palillos men. Gonzalez was beaten, blindfolded, handcuffed and held in a pantry for eight days for a ransom of $2 million.
