The gunman accused of killing four people in a Santa Monica shooting rampage Friday was apparently angry over his parents’ divorce and had some mental health issues in the past, a law enforcement source told The Times.

The suspect was identified by five law enforcement sources in Washington and Los Angeles as John Zawahri, in his 20s.

Other sources with knowledge of the investigation said detectives believe the shooting was sparked by a family dispute of some kind but emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages. The suspect’s past mental health issues occurred when he was juvenile, the law enforcement source said, but no further details were offered.

The sources all spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.

These sources said the alleged gunman’s first victims were his father and brother, whose bodies were found in a burning home.

One thing the investigators were trying to figure out is why the suspect wanted to be driven to Santa Monica College, where he was ultimately killed by police.

Police have stressed that the rampage was not a “school shooting” and that the violence occurred in many places and happened to end on the campus.

But a woman who was carjacked by the alleged gunman said he specifically asked to be taken to the college.

“You’re going to drive me to Santa Monica College and let me out,” Laura Sisk, 41, of Culver City recalled the suspect saying in an interview with The Times.

As of Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said they did not believe the college was the target.

Police were expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The first signs of trouble came about 11:50 a.m. Friday, when gunshots rang out in the vicinity of Kansas and Yorkshire avenues, in a quiet neighborhood near the 10 Freeway.

Jerry Cunningham-Rathner had just watched her son walk out the front door of her home a few minutes earlier when she heard the shots. She rushed outside, fearing he had been hit.

Instead, looking across the street, she saw a house engulfed in flames. A man standing in front of the house was dressed all in black, with an ammunition belt around his waist and a large rifle in his hands, she said.

“He looked like a SWAT officer,” she said.

Firefighters later found the bodies of two men inside the house. Police sources said the men were Samir Zawahri, 55, the owner of the house and the father of the alleged gunman, and one of his adult sons.

Cunningham-Rathner looked on in horror as two cars approached. She said the man pointed his weapon at the first, a Mazda hatchback, and yelled at the driver to stop. Cunningham-Rathner said he motioned for the woman driving the second car to keep moving. When she hesitated, the man opened fire on her silver Infiniti, wounding the driver slightly.

Sisk, the driver in the first car, froze, she said. She knew President Obama was in town for an event a few miles away and thought momentarily the man might be a Secret Service agent. She quickly realized that wasn’t the case.

She begged him to take the car instead. “No. You’re driving,” he said.

Before getting into the passenger’s seat next to Sisk, witnesses said, the gunman fired several shots around the neighborhood with what authorities later said was an “AR-15-style” semiautomatic rifle.

SATURDAY JUNE 8, 2013             2:35 PM

CNN reported Saturday that the gunman had a history of mental health problems, and was hospitalized after threatening to harm someone, according to a law enforcement source.

Friday’s dramatic midday events unfolded in only about 20 minutes.

The gunman first killed two men, believed to be his father, identified by the Los Angeles Times as Samir Zawahri, 55, and adult brother inside their Santa Monica home.

The shooter left, wearing all black and carrying a semi-automatic rifle, as the building burst into flames. He then carjacked a woman at gunpoint and forced her to drive him to the college campus in her Mazda hatchback.

“He told me to pull over,” the carjacked woman, 41-year-old Laura Sisk, told the Los Angeles Times.

“He insisted I get out of the car and pick up his bag. I think it was full of ammunition, and insisted I drive him.”

As they drove, he made her stop so he could fire at random — towards police cars, traffic and passersby.

He shot at a car, wounding one woman who was in critical condition late Friday, and at a city bus, leaving three women with minor injuries.

After Sisk dropped the gunman off at the two-year college, he shot two people in a red Ford Explorer in a parking lot, killing driver Navarro Franco and wounding a passenger.

College employee Joe Orcutt was in the parking lot when the gunman started shooting.

“He’s just standing there, like he’s modeling for some ammo magazine,” Orcutt told the Associated Press, “seeing who he could shoot, one bullet at a time, like target practice.”

The gunman then fatally shot a woman who was collecting recylables outside the library.

“We saw a woman get shot in the head,” Trena Johnson, an administrative assistant working in the dean’s office, told the Associated Press. “I haven’t been able to stop shaking.”

He went inside the library and opened fire as frightened students dashed for the exits.

“There was a panic – a lot of people rushed out,” Kai Matsukuma, who was in the library, told the Daily News. “Everyone in the library freaked out and ran out the back … I was outside the library before he got in.”

Cops caught up with the gunman in the library and fatally shot him during a firefight inside the building.

VIDEO: Six people were killed when a building in Philadelphia collapsed.

June 7, 2013

Authorities expected to file manslaughter charges against the man who was operating the crane at a Philadelphia building collapse that killed six people on Wednesday, officials said.

Marijuana was found in the system of the crane operator, Sean Benschop, 42, after the collapse, according to police sources.

The operator also admitted to taking codeine and other prescription drugs before the accident, and he was outfitted with a soft cast up to his elbow while working the heavy machinery, police sources told ABC News station WPVI. A source later confirmed the details to ABC News.

Mayor Michael Nutter’s office had said Benschop was charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter and one of reckless endangerment, but the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office later said that was mistaken.

“No one has been charged with anything in this case,” said Tasha Jamerson, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia D.A.’s office.

Benschop declined to answer questions when a reporter with the Philadelphia Inquirer contacted him by cell phone today.

Citing court records, The Inquirer reported Benschop has been arrested 10 times for a range of offenses, including drug charges, theft, firearms and assault.

In addition to those killed, 14 more were injured when the vacant building collapsed on a Salvation Army Thrift Store Wednesday morning.

Rescue workers used buckets and their bare hands to move bricks and rubble to free a 61-year-old woman late Wednesday night, but that was the sole piece of good news to come from the pile of rubble where a four-story building used to stand in Philadelphia’s Center City.

The 30-hour search-and-rescue operation for additional victims ended Thursday. At that time, Mayor Michael Nutter told ABC News that officials were confident there were no more people buried.

Those killed were identified as Kimberly Finnegan, Borbor Davis, Anne Bryan, Juanita Harmin, Mary Simpson and Roseline Conteh.

The building was being torn down as part of a community redevelopment project. The thrift store was open throughout the demolition.

Two of those killed were Salvation Army employees.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life of the six individuals who perished in the wake of yesterday’s building collapse,” the organization said in a statement. “The passing of these individuals, including two of our employees, will be felt across our entire organization and throughout the community.”

Philadelphia officials were facing tough questions over whether the accident could have been prevented.

Nutter and the city’s commissioner of licenses and inspections, Carlton Williams, have conceded that complaints about the working conditions at the demolition site were not followed up on.

City officials said that a routine inspection had found no violations at the property before demolition began. Williams said that inspectors had visited an adjoining property in May after complaints were lodged, but they found no violations and did not return to the Market Street site before Wednesday.

“No subsequent inspection occurred to indicate there was any unsafe conditions,” Williams said. “We did not follow up and we are definitely looking into that.”

Nutter promised a “wide-ranging investigation” into how and why the building collapsed.

Four people were killed and five wounded on Friday morning as a gunman, dressed in black and carrying an assault rifle, strode across Santa Monica firing at people, cars, a public bus and buildings before being shot and killed by the police at the Santa Monica College Library, the authorities said.

Joe Orcutt, who was in the bursar’s office at Santa Monica College on Friday, said he was nearly shot by a gunman.

Residents, who reported hearing gunshots and seeing a bus with its rear and side windows shattered by bullets, captured videos from the scene and posted updates to Twitter.

Lydia Viramontes, with her husband, Jose, and great-nephew Valente Casillas, was in a parking lot when she heard shots.

The Santa Monica police at first said six people had been killed by the gunman. On Friday evening, Sgt. Richard Lewis said the actual figure was four. One of the victims was said to be in critical condition.

The shooting took place about 10 minutes away from where President Obama was attending a private fund-raising lunch before heading to Palm Springs for a meeting with the president of China. He went by motorcade to the Los Angeles airport and flew to Palm Springs about 2 p.m.

The gunman, who was not identified, was described as 25 to 30 years old. His body was spotted lifeless about 200 yards from the library.

The carnage began Friday morning in eastern Santa Monica after the police responded to reports of shots being fired and a house engulfed in flames. The police said that two bodies had been found in the house, and that they were investigating whether those victims were related to the gunman.

From there, the gunman, wielding what the police said was probably an AR-15, hijacked a car driven by a young women and forced her to drive her across town toward the campus. Along the way, he emerged from the car at at least two intersections in this quiet beach town, firing indiscriminately at buildings, a public bus, cars and a police vehicle before ending his rampage in a confrontation with Santa Monica city and campus police officers.

At one point on Friday, the police said they had detained a potential suspect who they thought might have had a role in the shootings. Sergeant Lewis said the person was released and had no involvement in the shooting.

The authorities said the gunman, in addition to carrying the assault rifle, was armed with other weapons, including at least one handgun that was found at the scene.

Witnesses described a morning of terror, chaos and confusion.

Joe Orcutt, who works at the bursar’s office at Santa Monica College, said he went out to investigate after hearing what he first thought was a car backfiring. “He turns and points his gun at me, and at that point I jumped out of the way,” Mr. Orcutt said. “He shot, and I ducked out of the way.”

Witnesses described racing out the back door of the college library after the man walked in and opened fire.

“I didn’t want to take any chances,” said Cyrus Jabbari, 19, a freshman at the college.

Brett Holzhauer, 19, a student who was in the library, said blood was smeared on the walls and floors.

“There were hundreds of rounds of clips laying on the floor,” he said. “It looked like the guy just dropped his stuff right there.”

None of the people who were killed or wounded were immediately identified.

The rampage, starting at the burning house and ending at the library, took about 10 minutes, the authorities said.

Two people were found dead inside the burning house on Yorkshire Avenue. From there, the gunman, who the police said was wearing a bulletproof vest, shot two people sitting in a Ford Explorer; one of them died and the other was taken to Ronald Reagan U.C.L.A. Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition. He continued to Santa Monica College, where he fatally shot a woman he encountered at the campus before heading toward the library.

Another woman was listed in serious condition at the Reagan hospital. Three other women had minor injuries and were in good condition at the U.C.L.A. Medical Center, Santa Monica.
